Question

Missing items in "Start" menu and "All Programs" menus

Asked by: dgnc

I did a fresh install of Windows 7 Professional to a Crucial 256Gb SSD about 5 ays ago and installed a number of programs including Adobe CS4 Web Premium and Microsoft Office. All appeared OK until yesterday when most of these programs disappeared from both the Start Menu and the All programs menu. It left a few in both but there seems no pattern as to which ones remained e.g. Microsft Outlook is still there but not MS Word or Excel.

Some of these programs are on the taskbar and clicking on those and  programmes open OK. One of the taskbar item (for editpad pro) is  'not found but apart from that the taskbar appears OK.

All the programs are in "program files" or "program files (X86)"

Things like documents, pictures and videos are mapped to be on a drive (H:/users/... ) to the OS drive (C: - 256Gb SSD)

I have done a search but none of the solutions seem applicable or work and seem to relate to all items missing not just some of them.

How do I get my start menu and all programs menu items back

i would check if they are still on the disk; you can always make a shortcut to them, or add them to your programs list

Just rightclick on the missing icons and in their properties option navigate to right folder/exe....
There's no tool designed to rebuild W7 iconcache (just workarrounds) for the time being....There used to be powerToys but now they're gone...
Another option would be to download W7 manager  from Yamisoft
http://www.yamicsoft.com/windows7manager/index.htmlore options.
it has the rebuild icon cache and icon rest

another way :
Here is the step by step to rebuild Icon Cache data base in Windows 7:

Step 1: Close all folder windows. Launch Task Manager using the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC key sequence, or by running taskmgr.exe.

Step 2: In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.

Step 3: Click the End process button when asked for confirmation. From the File menu of Task Manager, select New Task (Run...). Type CMD.EXE, and click OK

Step 4: In the Command Prompt window, type the commands one by one and press ENTER after each command:

CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
DEL IconCache.db /a
EXIT

Step 5: In Task Manager, click File, select New Task (Run...) Type EXPLORER.EXE, and click OK.

when you delete icon cache database ,W7 rebuilds them when you restart....

None of these solutions has got the missing items back into the "Start Menu" and "All Programs menu"

The list in the 1st and 3rd images (startmenuallusers.jpg and allprog.jpg should have listed things like
Adobe -> Photoshop CS4

                Photoshop CS4 64bit
               Dream Weaver CS4
              Acrobat 9
              Flash CS4
              Fireworks CS4
              etc.
JGSoft -> Edit pro
               reg Exp Buddy
Firefox
RSS Bandit
FileZilla
Microsoft Expression Web 3

The Microsoft Office item should have a sub-menu which includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Visio, Access and Outlook but only has Outlook.

As I install programs now they are added to the list but it seems to be the ones I installed before yesterday that have gone missing from the Start and All programs menus. I do have all the icons for items that do appear in the lists back.

The programs are installed and work from
c:\Program Files
and c:\Program Files (X86) its just that the ones prior to yesterday are not appearing on the Start and All programs menus.

The problem seems to have been caused by one of two programs erasing the entries in the start folder when used in the default settings. Becuase I cannot prove it is either oneI cannot say which two but they both only mentioned Vista compatibility not windows 7.

the above solutions all aprtially helped but ultimatley the start menus had to be reconstructed nmaunually by adding shortcuts.

I am enclosing a warning i received from Kaspersky Internet Security. I have found it to be quite accurate so wonder if someone wrote a sub routine of some kind and through in an Trojan. Here is the warning. I am not implying wrong doing just reporting an disturbing pop up from Kaspersky;  The requested URL could not be retrieved

While trying to retrieve the URL:

The following threat was encountered:

The requested object is INFECTED with the following viruses: Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Peace.gy

Again I am not sure why but this seems to be legitimate. I am curious and if you find out what caused it I would be grateful for a reply.
