Question

BSOD in windows 7

Asked by: JarlK

Hi.
For some weeks ago, i installed Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit on my HTPC.

It has runned stable, but in the last 14 days its getting very unstable.
Suddently i will get a BSOD, and the computer restarts.
When the system is starting / booting up again, it sometimes freezes during the 'start up' logo. - And i have to hit the reset button. Then it boots up, and works again.

The strange thing is that the system has runned well.

My specs :
Intel Quadcore 6600 - G0
Asus P5K Premium
4 GB Adata ram
1 WD raptor disk (10.000 RPM)
2 WD Greenline disks (1 tb)
Hauppauge TV Tuner card (Dual interface)

I have imported the XML file from the log, into a txt doc - can you use it ? Or should i upload the minidump file? 'C:\Windows\Minidump\110909-24148-01.dmp'

Here is some info from the 'crash log'

Have you installed updates ? if so, try to roll them back.
Let us know if that works, if not we must search on.

by: JarlKPosted on 2009-11-09 at 03:12:39ID: 25774864

Okay. I will try to roll back updates.

by: noxchoPosted on 2009-11-09 at 07:46:45ID: 25776896

Can you post here the minidump file itself? Just change its extension to txt or png

by: JarlKPosted on 2009-11-09 at 08:10:31ID: 25777165

B-Byte : Okay now i have removed all updates (Not the office updates)
But have removed 8 to 10 updates and patches. When i restartet the system the computer stopped at the loading screen! Nothing was happening.

Noxcho : I have tried to open the *.dmp file in notepad ? But its not making sense the text that is showned!
Should i upload the dmp file somwhere?

¾~ ¬øÿÿ¾~ ¬øÿÿ    ÿÿÿÿ        (¾~ ¬øÿÿ(¾~ ¬øÿÿ
Somthing like that is in the dmp file!

by: noxchoPosted on 2009-11-09 at 09:27:13ID: 25777988

I can open it. Just attach it here. Change its extension from .dmp to .txt or .png. This will allow you to add it here.
When I download it I can change the extension back and see the dmp file.

by: JarlKPosted on 2009-11-09 at 10:23:37ID: 25778534

Do you have a speciel app, so you can open dmp files ?

Anyway - Here it is!!

by: noxchoPosted on 2009-11-09 at 11:03:04ID: 25778858

Your problem causer is csrss.exe file.
First of all look up your local drives if this file is located anywhere else except C:\Windows\System32
If not then recreate the user profile. Microsoft refers to corrupt user profile that causes problems to Windows.
Looking for further information..

by: noxchoPosted on 2009-11-09 at 11:03:48ID: 25778873

And yes, you can open minidump files yourself following these instructions: http://www.pchell.com/support/minidumps.shtml

by: noxchoPosted on 2009-11-09 at 11:08:26ID: 25778925

Ok another two suggestions: virus (refers to my first suggestion to look if the process is living in wrong directory) and power supply.

by: JarlKPosted on 2009-11-09 at 11:15:35ID: 25779001

What should be the problem with the PSU ?

by: noxchoPosted on 2009-11-09 at 11:25:53ID: 25779084

Looking via the internet I found similar issue that author commented as resolved when PSU was changed.
But your case could be different. Start first virtus check. Then create new User Account and see if you get BSOD while working there. If yes then go on with driver update (video drivers).
And if it persists then go on with PSU.

by: JarlKPosted on 2009-11-09 at 11:28:17ID: 25779108

I have had some thoughts that my PSU had some problems! hmm!

Im a bit suprised that you tell me it could be the PSU!

by: noxchoPosted on 2009-11-09 at 11:37:36ID: 25779184

Checks on software level are easier so go on first with them. You will have chance to change PSU yet.

by: JarlKPosted on 2009-11-09 at 12:45:18ID: 25779855

I think it might be a problem with the PSU then, why should my system freeze ever 3 - 4 time i power the machine up ?

I have just scanned with Maleware antibytes, witch found one 'hijack.Displayproperties'

But it looks like its whitelisted : http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7653

Have just scanned the system with NOD32 - No virus detected!

Any more programs i should try ? (Combofix can't run in 64 bit)

by: noxchoPosted on 2009-11-09 at 13:19:42ID: 25780210

Ok with scan. Try to create one more account and login there. See if you get problems.

by: JarlKPosted on 2009-11-09 at 13:22:24ID: 25780234

Noxcho : I will!

My only thoughts is that the 'startup screen' has nothing to do with the accounts - Wouldent you agree?

I will try to create a new acc. now, and us it for some time! You will hear from me in some days! (If the system is running well)

by: noxchoPosted on 2009-11-09 at 13:31:17ID: 25780321

Boot screen problems could also RAM or HDD caused. So we cannot definitely rely on PSU theory. Let us check all one by one. At the moment you can test HDD with its vendor tools and memory with Windows memtest.exe utility.

by: JarlKPosted on 2009-11-09 at 13:33:47ID: 25780351

HDD Is brand new (The set of hdd i had before, were suddently unstable too)

I will run a memtest tommorow!

by: JarlKPosted on 2009-11-12 at 05:58:19ID: 25804460

Memtest 86 = No fail detected.

In the last couple of days, there hasent been any crash on the machine. I havent yet maked a new user!

by: JarlKPosted on 2009-11-15 at 23:51:50ID: 25828429

Okay last night i had a BSOD again. (It has runned well now in some days now). No dump file was created, but the error was found in the Eventlog manager.

Translated via google translate :
The system has rebooted without closing down properly. This error may be because the system has stopped responding, has gone down or that the flow disappeared unexpectedly.

Error 41 - Kernel Power

by: noxchoPosted on 2009-11-16 at 02:16:59ID: 25828969

Strange that it does not create minidums. Please check again if everything is configured correctly to get minidump like shown here: http://www.pchell.com/support/minidumps.shtml

by: JarlKPosted on 2009-11-16 at 02:34:38ID: 25829034

It looks okay (Checked with the link)

But here is a screenshot of the minidumps there is availble. ! The date is not matching ?

But take a look thx.

by: noxchoPosted on 2009-11-16 at 02:55:27ID: 25829109

Give me the latest. That is better than nothing.

by: JarlKPosted on 2009-11-16 at 03:06:01ID: 25829159

Here.

by: noxchoPosted on 2009-11-16 at 04:35:40ID: 25829597

Can you update your chipset drivers? Also is there AHCI mode enabled in BIOS?
Dump file says that problem is in hardware and this is the worst.
Hardware error means that any part of your PC can be the cause:
RAM
PSU
HDD
Chipset

by: JarlKPosted on 2009-11-16 at 04:42:44ID: 25829633

The chipset driver is already updated with newest x64 bit drivers from Asus´s HP.

AHCI - What is it ?

I think this is enabled ( But will check in some hours )

by: noxchoPosted on 2009-11-16 at 05:26:18ID: 25829936

This is the mode of HDD - Advanced Host Controller Interface
Look here: http://www.intel.com/technology/serialata/ahci.htm
In BIOS you can select in which mode your HDD should work: RAID, AHCI or SATA\IDE.
The preferred one is IDE as it is most common.

by: JarlKPosted on 2009-11-16 at 09:46:08ID: 25832150

AHCI is disabled! IDE was default setting!

by: JarlKPosted on 2009-11-25 at 00:46:52ID: 25905270

Well no BSOD since 16/11-2009

by: noxchoPosted on 2009-11-25 at 07:50:29ID: 25908140

Interesting. Did you make any change to PC configuration or OS before it stopped the BSODs?

by: JarlKPosted on 2009-11-25 at 13:56:32ID: 25911544

Noap ! I removed windows update files ? I havent maked a new user acc yet!

Uptime for 6 days now

by: JarlKPosted on 2009-12-01 at 06:45:15ID: 25943125

Thx for helping me through Noxcho !
