Windows/Microsoft Update no longer needs Internet Explorer to function properly. That changed with Vista.
Outlook Express was depreciated with Windows Vista, which gave the user 'Windows Mail'. Windows Mail has been depreciated in Windows 7, which comes with NO e-mail client. Microsoft suggests the user download Windows Live Essentials, which comes with "Windows Live Mail".
IE8 is not a bad browser, user philosophy not withstanding, just leave it on the machine and use it to download your preferred browser (as most folks do).
Turn on automatic update, then go to control panel and remove programs then add and remove components, then remove outlook, and IE from there.
Just a note IE and Outlook express are tied to ms word, ms ppt, ms access, however you should not that you cannot permanently remove this from software no matter how you try, you only manage to remove it from the start menu thats all, even if you remove the IE folder from the program file once you restart your computer and go to the help page from within ms word it replaces itself.
