How to Backup specific files in Windows 7 and Restore XP Backup files in Windos 7
I have Windows 7 Professional and want to backup specific file and also do a restore of previous XP backup files.
I ran W7 backup and I just wanted to test by backing a file, but it only display folders to choose. Also after "fail" backup fun, it creates a file in the drive that seems to have data (because I click on it, choose "manage space used") but if I right-click it, it shows size-on-disk 0. When I click on "View Backup" it only display "delete" files

One last thing, when backing up a small 22mb file, it goes thru a ridiculous long process of "Creating a shadow copy"

It's getting more weird. Its seems that is doing the backup, but when I check the external drive free space, it hasn't change. Yet I disconnect the drive and I can't get the "manage space" to see the backups, so it seems it backing to the drive. Also I when I do click "manage space" and the "view backups" I see the backups done (but can't see its contents).

Thanx, restore a W7 backup I've already done. I would like to restore a backup done in XP.
You must restore XP data with a tool that was used to create the backup in the first place.
That means using an XP machine.This is by design.
Windows XP version of backup is not the same as that of Windows 7.
Backup File extensions are different...
So restore XP backup on a xp machine (burn it to a CD or use USB).

thats not good news. Backup are over 4gb; super long process if go by this...

Ok. Prior to closing can you comment on parts of my initial question:
1. Does W7 permit to create backup scripts like XP?
2. I tested a 22mb backup and it took forever, is it normal or am I missing something?
3. After the backup, I notice the "file" created in the destination drive but the drives size doesn't change (and I backed up 3 times with 3 different files); is it like this?

Windows Backup always does compressed backup. As a result backup time will be more when compared to simple file copying. However since the subsequent backups would be incremental, where in only the files that change would get backed up, the subsequent backups should be much faster.
Also, are you including system image backup as part of backup configuration? If so, the data getting backed up would also include the used space in the boot/system volumes. So the time taken for backing up 250 GB as files might be much lesser than 14 hours.

I must agree that this backup feature of Windows 7 due to its slowness should be better described as 'unusable'.
And another thing ....people when using backup often confuse the show free space

not sure what you mean....It depends where you backup the thing...

What I mean is that I took a pic of the external drive and it was 56gb free 111gb. After doing the backup to that drive, I compared it and stood the same values, as if no data was saved there. I repeated the backup with 3 other files, that should have decrease the 56gb free to at least 49gb and still displayed 56gb free.
