Adobe Flash Player just will not install

While trying to install flash ... are you using a standard user or admin ?

There is just one user on this computer and it is an Administrative account.

I forgot to mention that I tried turning of UAC and installing Flash and also disabled Microsoft Security Essentials before installing Flash.

What browser are you using. IE8x64 doesn't support flash, so if you've installed it, it still won't work. Use the x86 IE and you should find it will work.

No, I am not using the 64bit browser.  After what seems like a completed installation of Flash without any errors, If I check the IE Add-ons section the Shockwave Flash Object entry is not there, so it definitly is not getting installed.  I also tried setting up a new administrative user account and installing Flash from that account but still no luck.

Please make sure ALL browsers are closed to proceed with setup and all other media programs with built in browsers like WMP,RealPlayer, media Jukebox, itunes, etc are closed as well.

You may need to uninstall the plugin, reboot, and reinstall it before you load any other browsers, then try this solution and make sure it works for you.

Yes, I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times with no luck.  I have no other programs running.  I have disabled all startup items in MSconfig and disabled all NON-Microsoft Services as well as uninstall MSE security and still no luck.  I have downloaded and manually installed Flash and still no go.  I am really baffled???? Everything else seems to working perfectly.  Could it be some permissions issue of some kind?

Please provide screenshots of your browser plugin list and your startup items and your "services.msc" (obtained by clicking run command then typing that without the " into that.

I think it is a Windows 7 problem.  I like Windows 7, when it is working, but it seems that when something does go wrong it is close to impossible to fix it without reinstalling from scratch.

did you try installing it in compatibility mode for windows xp or vista?

Download flash player first

Then run command prompt as admin -Go to the flash player download location and type this command

install_flash_player_ax.exe /install

This is called silent install.

While running this command make sure internet explorer is not running. Launch task manager and check for iexplorer. If its running close it.

Just an aside, but for safety's sake I would always recommend using the official Adobe (Macromedia) downloads, as opposed to any file sharing website.

Thanks Ded9,  I had hope for this but no luck.  I uninstalled Flash, used the Flash uninstaller, Rebooted the computer, downloaded the latest version of Flash to the desktop, checked to make sure IE was not running and ran the install from an admin cmd prompt.  If I then checked installed programs and it shows as being installed, does not show in the add-ons list in IE, and every site I goto to watch a video tells me I need flash installed to play the video.

Yes, it works fine in Firefox.  But my client does not want Firefox and only wants IE.

Please also verify these settings as well in your security options as well as your main internet options. these shall be set for the "internet" zone.

Yes, I have played with all the IE settings, tried restoring all to the default settings and completely reset IE altogether.  As I mentioned earlier I even upgraded to IE 9 and then removed it when it did not work as well.

telling the client he cannot use IE with flash and suggest him to use another browser in the meantime while you would find a better solution?

The Flash Uninstaller uninstalls all versions, both ActiveX and Plugin.  There are two installations of Adobe Flash Player.  One is for IE only and the other one is for Firefox and others.

It sounds like you might have installed the one for Firefox instead of the ActiveX one for IE.

Please try the following:

1.Run the latest Flash uninstaller:  http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player.exe

2. Use the latest msi version f the installer:
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/licensing/win/install_flash_player_10_active_x.msi

  You could just use GPO to install the msi, but if not the silent command line would be:

msiexec /i "path\to\install_flash_player_10_active_x.msi" /qn

Thanks Daz 1234,  Any help is great.  When I said that firefox was working, I installed Firefox and then went to Adobe.com and installed Flash for Firefox.  I have since uninstalled both.
I am installing the correct version of flash for IE8.  I have tried installing flash from the Adobe site both automatic and manually.  I have tried it from the Youtube link as well as other sites when it says that I need flash.  I have used all the uninstallers both from Control panel and the uninstaller from Adobe.  As of now, I have uninstalled MSE security, turned of UAC, Turned off the Windows Firewall and disabled all startup items in MSConfig.  The machine seems to be running perfectly in every other way.  I am going to play with it a little longer before I give up and reinstall Windows 7.  The Client insists that he wants IE working correctly and assumes that if I can not get Flash to work in IE that there must be something very wrong with the computer and to make him switch to another browser is not fixing the problem but rather working around it.

have you tried my solutions? tried it in all zones except restricted sites zones? Please try this I had the same problem and I fixed it this way. best of luck.

Yes, I have tried all remixedcat suggestions and when I changed the internet settings to what you showed, I no longer get the error from Youtube that prompts to install flash but rather just a black box with at red x in the upper right corner.  Same results on other sites.  I tried installing flash in compatibilty mode, trying all settings there.   Which one of your solutions fixed your problem?

All I did was mod the zone settings. worked like a charm.

I think my problem has more to do with Flash is not installing, even though it does not indicate any errors and appears to install correctly.   No errors listed in any of the logs either.

Thank you all for your suggestios.  I have run out to appointments and will take this back up tonight and then probably give up and reinstall Windows then.  In the meantime, if you have any more suggestions, feel free to send them along and I will try them tonight.

There is no point adding it: if it does not exist then it cannot kill the ActiveX control.

Ok. I'm sorry then, I'm out of any ideas (other than what remixedcat has already suggested).  Therefore it is possible that you should cut your losses and rebuild the computer.  I know that this is a sledgehammer to crack a nut, but there is always a point at which you have to stop hitting your head against the wall and start from scratch.

It seems you have decided to reinstall  but can try this step.

Run cmd as admin and paste this command and hit enter

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose

After running this command restart the computer and then try installing flash.

In the above article there is a video which shows how to uninstall internet explorer 8.

Whats in this video :- go to control panel-program features- click on turn windows feature on and off - and then uncheck internet explorer 8. It will prompt to restart the computer. Go ahead and restart the computer.

After you restart the computer - go back to program and features- click on turn windows feature on and off - put a check on internet explorer - and then restart the computer.

Install flash and check how it works in internet explorer.

I would recommend trying this steps before you plan reinstalling the operating system.

I did have the second Registry Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000}\

The registry value under that key called "Compatibility Flags" whose DWORD data value was 400 (Hex) / 1024 (Decimal),  I changed it to 0 (zero) and then restart IE and reinstalled Flash.

Flash is working just fine now!  Thanks so much.  I was a few moments away from reinstalling Windows which would have been a big pain in the A??.  

Any ideas how this happened?

I'm very pleased you found it.  You had quite a big-old thread going here, so I'm pleased you looked back and double checked.

I don't really know what could have set this: it is a feature of IE now that there are ActiveX 'kill bits' that can be set that will stop all efforts for an ActiveX control to start.

My best guess is that an anti-malware / anti-virus product may have done it with too-protective settings.  One possibility is that your client ran some anti-malware software and set the settings to most protective.

But the truth is I really don't know - and please don't accuse your client of something they may not have knowingly done.  :o)
