How do i increase the PATH Environment variable in Windows 7

I have a new laptop running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and i am trying to install Oracle Developer Suite 10g (10.1.2.0.2).
Half way through the installation process it is trying to set the PATH environment variable and gives me an error that "The value of the environment variable path is more than 1023 characters. This value cannot be set".
This is a brand new laptop and if i compare the value of the PATH environment variable it is much longer than the XP machine i have been using up to now.
The question is how can i change the length os the PATH environment variable from 1024 characters to 2048 ?

Dear Bearpeidog,

I know how the VALUE of the PATH environment variable can be changed. The question is how to change the allowed length from 1024 characters to 2048 so that i can extend the VALUE with extra entries.
Sorry about the above response - it obviously doesn't answer your question.  I'm not sure it can be extended but perhaps you can try to shorten the existing path.
Dear Bearpeidog,

I am afraid trying to shorten the existing value of PATH is not an option.
I know that in old versions of DOS this was possible. I am sure there must be a way to do it in Windows 7 as well.

Thanks anyway

Can you use the DOS compatible names to shorten it?  IE:  Dir/x will show you the shortnames such as Progra~1  for program files.    Appears to be supported in Windows 7.

Sorry about the too quick of reply ealier.
actually the path environment is 32768 characters.. One trick that I've heard people use is to create a hard link to the long path to create a new, shorter name for that same path. or use the 8.3 naming convention
Dear all,

The hint by Billprew helped. I tried to extend the value of PATH manually and it was OK. So, what i did i removed temporarily some of the entries to shorten it to around 500 characters, carried out the installation which appended the required entries on the existing value and finished successfully.
Finally i manually appended the entries i had removed and now everything is OK.
Apparently, the limitation was on the Oracle installer.
Glad you worked around that, thanks for the points.
