Move a TaskBar icon into System tray in windows 7.

Trayit was an xp program that would move a taskbar icon into the system tray.  Their latest version is from 2009 and even then it did not support xp 64 bit, so I am sure it will not work on my windows 7 64  bit.

Does anybody know of a similar product that will work with window 7?

My specific need is a way to move the "devices and printers" task into the system tray.

I am looking for a better workaround for a Window 7 design flaw.

On my machine, "Devices and Printers"  and "Safely remove hardware and eject media" both take about a minute to open up.  See https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/25730058/Windows-7-64bit-Safely-Remove-Hardware-Icon-takes-too-long.html?anchorAnswerId=35977558#a35977558 for details.

My current workaround is to open Devices and Printers, and leave it open for the whole day.  It turns out that makes both functions work very fast.   But the task bar shows the extra task which takes valuable room.

Trendmicro doesn't like that site.  Have you had personal experience with it?

Windows 7 gives you an option to create shortcuts on task bar and its pretty simple,
Check this article for details: http://techdunes.com/2011/03/28/how-to-create-restart-button-on-taskbar-on-windows-7/
techdunes, you got it backwards.

I want to remove an item from the taskbar.  You are telling me how to add a shortcut to the taskbar. (btw I already knew how to do that.)

rberke,
To remove an item ,
Right click on the Start Button in lower left corner then Left click properties.

The first tab along the toop is Taskbar ,  Click on it then Customize....

In the center is a list cof Icons & Behaviors.

Just change the setting of the item you want to Hide icon and notifications.

And those Icons will no longer show in the taskbar.

Below the list is an option to turn off the system icons.
Below that if the Always show all icons and notifications is checked then all will be set to on.

Wes
wmiller, Customize only affects the notifications area (also known as the System Tray).  Sometimes people refer to taskbar when they mean notification area, or a toolbar. In most microsoft documentation these are distinct items.

The attached picture should clear up any misunderstanding about my request.

TechDunes, 4t-tray does almost exactly what I want. Here is how:

The whole world knows and loves the 3 standard Minimize/Maximize/Close buttons in the upper right hand of every Window. After I configured 4t-tray, every window now has a 4th button "Minimize to System Tray".  Instead of closing my app, I simply click minimize to tray button. When I want to reopen the app, it appears instantly. See the attached picture for details.

4t-tray has other features such as "keep on top" and "make transparent", but I am not using them.

There is one minor problem:  While my application is minimized to tray,  the Start Menu's "Device and Printers" button does not work, probably because it does not automatically "UnMinimize" the system tray.  But, that is insignificant.  Thanks a lot, this solves a problem that has been bugging me for over a year (https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/25730058/Windows-7-64bit-Safely-Remove-Hardware-Icon-takes-too-long.html)

Nearly perfect
4t-tray is very flexible. Alt Esc is the default hot key alternative to the "Minimize to Tray" button. I am using it exclusively. I then reconfigured 4t-tray, so the "Minimize to Tray" button is gone.    All those changes took less than a minute of my time.  NEAT.
I found a solution to the minor problem mentioned in post 35984802.  I enabled the 4t-tray option named:
"Allow the hidden application to restore itself from the hidden state".

Now, I can open Devices and Printers just like I have always done for the the last year.  The only change to my daily work habits is to always close Devices and Printers with Shift+Esc.

(In other words, I no longer need the system tray chevron procedure shown in the image at the bottom of 35984802.)
