Mouse movement is sporadic on Windows 7 home pc

I've got a 10 gig 64 bit AMD FX 6100 Six-Core Processor Windows 7 Home Premium computer.  So computer speed is not the issue.

The mouse movement is constantly sporadic.  I've run Processor Explorer and can't figure out what is causing it.  I realize it is most likely something running in the background, but what?  It is very frustrating.  Sometimes the mouse doesn't even move, then it will shoot across the screen.

ANY help would be appreciated.

Forgot to mention the mouse is wireless.  I'll try a wired mouse.  Any recommendations on a GREAT wireless mouse?
Are there things in my home office enviroment that can effect the wireless mouse?

yep, wired is working perfectly.  I just order the Logitech M505.  Great reviews.  We'll see how responsive it is.
thanks
I'm interested to know how it works for you. If you don't mind, please post back here after you've taken it for a spin. Tks!
