windows 7 64 bit vb6 application and Crystal XI problem on some machines

Experts
I have an old VB6/Crystal XI development system on Windows 2000.
I have made the application run on windows XP and Windows 7 (32 bit) - all without recent problems (the actual process was determined by yourselves back in 2009).
Due the demise of XP we are forced down the windows 7 64 (bit path).
I have this running OK on one 64 bit machine - but on others I get "Logon failure" when trying to view or print from within the application.
%windir%\syswow64\odbcad32.exe has been run and have set up "SQL Server" in System DSN and also "SQL Native Client"; neither have any effect.
I've found somewhere that MDAC needs to be re-installed but am loath to try this.
Anyone out there able to help?
Keith
