The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

I just got a Verizon 6700 to replace my Blackberry. I setup two of my email accounts and I’m receiving messages for those two account without any problems. But whenever I send a message, I get an error dialog that says:

“Messages connot be downloaded to you mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then, try to download messages again.”

When I tap “OK”, the dialog box repeats. I tap “OK” again and the box goes away. The message is still in the outbox. I’ve verified my server settings for both accounts and they are correct.

I have a solution...

Verizon offers an SMTP server for outgoing mail. Using that instead of the SMTP server associated with the account allows outgoing email.

I'm still curious why I can't use the "regular" server for outgoing email.

ISPs normally restrict the machines that can use their smtp server to ones that are on their own subnet, even if some form of authentication is required.
It's inconvenient for sure and way back when (before the prevalence of spam) you could practically connect to any mail server and it would be accepted.

These aren't ISP email accounts. They are through two different hosting services.

you might need to confirm the form of authentication required for posting email 'off-network'. Something like 'pop before smtp' maybe?

03.02.2007 at 05:21AM PST, ID: 18639954
Did that. In fact, I've pretty much mirrored my Outlook desktop settings.

03.02.2007 at 05:44AM PST, ID: 18640088
and you've tried it with/without the 'requires authentication' check box?

03.02.2007 at 06:05AM PST, ID: 18640652
No, the hosting service requires authentication.

03.02.2007 at 06:10AM PST, ID: 18640703
There might be some port blocking involved. Does your hosting service offer alternative ports?

03.02.2007 at 06:36AM PST, ID: 18640943
you could try port 587 instead of 25 all the same. It's an established alternative.

03.02.2007 at 06:43AM PST, ID: 18641038
One server requires 3535 and the other 25. No other ports are available. I selected the 3535 port using ":3535" after the server name. Still won't send. :-(

03.02.2007 at 06:58AM PST, ID: 18641214
if you want to fault find further:
You should install a telnet client on your device and try to connect. Possibly pocketputty (free) will work http://www.pocketputty.net/ or maybe zatelnet light http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-zatelnet-light-1-3.html but that requires .net compact framework installed too.
What you would do is telnet to your hosts using port 25/3535 instead of 22/23 and see if you get a reply. If you do then it's more than likely an authentication issue. If you don't; there's a port block.
If you do get a response, you could also trial an email client like flexmail which is a signficant improvement and far more configurable and see if you do better with that.

Well, for some reason it started working. I had deleted the accounts and recreated them multiple times.

This last time, I connected through my internal wireless (802.11b) network before creating one account. It sent/received with no problems. I then disconnected from the internal network and used the Verizon EDVO connection and it still worked!?!?

I then created the account for the second server (still using the Verizon EDVO network) and that worked.

I have no idea why it started working.

glad it worked out!
