I apologize in advance for the length of this post...but my questions are a bit complex...
I currently have a Samsung i700 Pocket PC set up so that it syncs to both my work PC and my home PC...in a somewhat convoluted manner. I'm a bit of a stickler for keeping personal and work information separate, so, rather than using my Exchange server to host my primary .pst file, I've set up a .pst on the local drive on my laptop.
Since I still want my assistant to have access to my calendar, contacts, and tasks to schedule meetings, etc., I still keep and use the Exchange server .pst with my assistant listed as a "delegate." The only solution I've found that allows me to ensure that my local .pst has both my work and personal information - so that I have access to both on my PPC - is to open the calendars, tasks, etc., for both .pst files side-by-side and manually copy from the Exchange .pst to the local .pst.
In order to make life easier on my back, I synchronize all important files, including my .pst file, using Second Copy (not Activesync) onto a portable drive which I can then bring home instead of my laptop and still have access to all relevant files, including my .pst file. I can then synchronize essentially the same local .pst file both at the office and at home with my PPC. While this solution has some drawbacks - the biggest of which is that, once I've synched at one location, the other insists that I haven't yet synchronized and I wind up having to move every bit of data from scratch from the .pst to the PPC - it's the best method I've been able to identify that comes close to meeting my needs.
I've now just upgraded to the new Samsung i760 PPC phone and would like to: a) take advantage of the Windows Mobile 6 push technology to sync wirelessly w/ my work Exchange .pst while allowing my assistant access to my calendar, contacts, and tasks; and b) still be able to keep personal information private.
So, my questions are:
1) If I move my main .pst file to the Exchange server, is there a better way of separating my work and personal data than to just continue to use the "delegate" function but then mark items that are personal as "private?" I'm looking for a permanent solution that will stick even when I decide to move on from my current job...in other words, once I'm gone, my office should still be able to access relevant work emails and documents from my .pst but should permanently be barred from accessing my personal info.
2) Can I then create a second partnership on my home PC to allow me to synchronize the Exchange .pst on a local drive as a backup? If so, what is the best way to set this up to ensure smooth syncs that don't require me to synchronize every bit of data from scratch each time?
3) In order to ensure that all of the data I need is on my PPC, I'll have to migrate a significant amount of the data that currently resides on my local .pst to my Exchange .pst. Will the "export" function work better than just opening both .psts in Outlook and copying the files from one to the other?
4) If I decide to just get going with my local .pst before setting up my Exchange .pst w/ wireless sync, will it be relatively straight forward to shift from the partnership w/ my local .pst to the partnership on the Exchange server?
Sorry for the long wind up and thank you, in advance for your suggestions.
