Question

Why will my Sprint HTC Mogul not sync with Vista Mobile Device Center??

Asked by: angelleye

I've got a Sprint HTC Mogul and I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 bit on my desktop and Vista Business 32-bit on my laptop.

I've installed the latest version of Mobile Device Manager on each of the computers.  The phone has successfully synced with the desktop before, and there is a relationship configured in the MDC for it.  However, it only connects and syncs successfully about 1 in 100 times.

When I very first tried to get it all setup I sat here for a long time plugging it in and unplugging it and finally it synced all of my contacts into the phone which is really all I needed.  From that point on I plug the phone in to charge it and every once in awhile it'll actually connect to MDC and sync.  No idea why it works when it does.

Everytime I plug in the phone I hear the little sound Vista makes when you plug a USB device and 1 of two things happens.  Nothing....or, I see a message that USB Device Cannot be Recognized.  Either way of course the MDC shows Not Connected and I can't sync anything.

I thought maybe this was a 64-bit thing so I tried it on my laptop and I can't get it to recognize either.  Actually, when I install the MDC it says it installed all of the drivers successfully.  Then when I plug in my phone the first time it successfully installs it and shows that it's an HTC Mogul.  Then nothing happens, though.  I unplug and plug back in, I hear the sound, nothing happens.

I open up MDC and it just shows Not Connected.

Any information on what the heck is going on here would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Go into ActiveSync on the phone and check that under Menu>Connections that it is set to use USB. Also, under Menu>Options, remove any reference to "Windows PC" if you see them there to clear out existing partnerships.

Have you tried different USB ports on the two computers? Have you tried installing or updating chipset drivers for your two computers?

Last resort is to check for a ROM update for your Mogul which would require a hard reset of the device and would probably solve it as well.

ActiveSync has been wiped out and reconfigured a few times now.  I've tried multiple USB ports.  All chipset drivers on all my machines are completely up-to-date.  The phone has been updated with the latest ROM as well (had to do that on my 32 bit machine).

Works perfectly on 32 bit windows no matter how I connect.  On 64 bit windows the thing gets recognized about once every 100 times I plug it in.  Literally.  It works perfectly over Bluetooth all the time on any machine.  I plug this thing in simply to charge it expecting to get my "unrecognized device" message every time and I normally do, but the there's that one time out of 100 it'll suddenly connect and sync everything when I plug in the USB.

I have the same problem angelleye. I don't have a Bluetooth enabled PC though, so I'm completely stuck.

This solved my issues:

Step 1: Press Start
Step 2: Select settings
Step 3: Select (6) Connections
[Step 4: Select (0) More] [I don't have this step]
Step 5: Select (1) USB to PC
Changing the type of USB connection your device uses can help with problems
connecting ActiveSync.
Step 6: Disable the option - Enable advanced network functionality
Step 7: Press done 3 times
Step 8: Return to main screen.
Step 9: Uninstall unrecognized USB device in device manager (on PC)
Step 10: reboot Phone and reconnect

YoungBonzi:  I had seen that "solution" posted in a number of different places but it seems to have mixed results for people.  I'm one of the ones that it doesn't seem to change a thing with.

What's strange, though, is that for the past few weeks my USB connection to this machine is working a lot more than it used to.  Seems like about every other time now it'll go ahead and connect.  I have no idea what I've done to make it start working (oh, and my advanced networking option is still checked).

Does anyone have a definite answer to syncing a mobile unit via bluetooth and Windows Mobile Device Center? I have a Sprint HTC with Windows Mobile 6.1 and Windows Vista Business 64-bit. I briefly got the syncing to work via bluetooth only yesterday but today it was not working and I have spent hours trying to recover it. I can only sync via USB which is so totally antiquated. Where are the answers????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Try opening ActiveSync on the phone prior to connecting it to the computer.  That seems to be working for me.
