One of our departments has a quote for a symbol mc3090. The quote has a charge for MCL client software - that's all I know. In my research I found that SDK comes with the scanner. If so, why would one need client software? Can all programming be done through the SDK

Several years ago we began application development on Symbol scanners, and had to first decide how to approach it. Alexey is exactly right--MCL is a development tool designed to shorten the time and effort required to implement apps on your scanner. It should be a good bit faster than starting from scratch with C or VB, but we decided on VB vs. MCL because MCL:
1) is expensive to buy the core development software
2) licenses you on several different levels, such as per development computer, per scanner, and per host workstation (as I remember)
3) necessarily restricts you to the functionality they can provide
In contrast, with VB, we paid a modest charge for the development software (Visual Studio 2005), plus we don't have to pay licensing fees, and we can do virtually anything we want to in VB without restrictions. In our case it took quite a while to get the job done, because we had no prior experience with VB, but if you have C or VB experience, you'll be way ahead of the game.
Also note that we've had to use very little of the SDK functionality; it's there if you need it, but for the most part we're using VB capabilities instead.
And one unasked for piece of advice...be careful with the 3090, as it is limited in some ways compared to the 9090. It IS cheaper, but it suffers from issues such as a smaller screen, softer beeper, and no long-range Lorax option...issues that may or may not affect your app.

well, it depends on what are you going to do with the devices. you definitely can use just the SDK (with C++ or C#/VB.NET)
what does this MCL client software do? from www.mcl-collection.com one could conclude that it is yet another framework to make RAD development. if you want it, well, maybe that's worth its charge.
but surely you can develop whatever you need with just the SDK
