Question

(Windows Mobile) - how make a CAB setup from a JAR file?

Asked by: asgarcymed

Someone ( http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=85199 ) made a native WinMo setup.cab from a jar file (Java Mobile aka J2ME/MIDP/CLDC) - in this example, Opera Mini 5 Beta is installed and runs "seeming" it is a native WinMo app (for the ignorant end-user it is the same: 1 click on the setup.cab, to install; + 1 click on the shortcut.lnk to run it each time)...

I would like to know how it is possible to make a setup.cab from a jar file, exactly like someone did with Opera Mini 5 Beta.

I urgently need to make the same with the "gmail.jar" (lastest version, up-to-date...).
I cannot run such "gmail.jar" file by its own (I tried a lot of JVMs, such as JavaFX, Jbed, Jblend, Mysaifu, and so on)...
Accessing to the mobile gmail web site; or using the "messages" app (POP3/IMAP/SMTP or ActiveSync/Push eMail); all are awful solutions! There is nothing as good as the java mobile gmail app, to easily manage the gmail-specific features, like the "stars", "labels", shortcuts, and so on)...

Thanks and regards.

Thank you very much for replying!

"WinCE CAB Manager" is an excellent setup.cab maker/editor!
I opened the opera.cab with "WinCE CAB Manager" and so I got closer to the solution, although I still not being able to make a working gmail.cab setup...
One thing seeming to be important is that the java files must run over jbed.exe, with arguments:

\windows\jbed.exe -run s0_

My doubts are: which java files will run?; where are they?... it seems that the jar file cannot run directly... inside the jar file (browsing/extracting with 7-Zip) there are ".class" files (java bytecodes), but such ".class" files are not to run over jbed.exe directly...

I attach the ".inf" file, generated by "WinCE CAB Manager".
What a mess!

Windows mobile phones need to have a java emulator on it (most phones do have it)

by: asgarcymedPosted on 2009-11-04 at 14:23:18ID: 25744683

Yes, it's true (more precisely, it is a "MIDlet Manager"/"Java Virtual Machine (JVM)", not an "emulator"). The problem is that there are many MIDlet Managers and no one works really well... Even so, Jbed seems to be best (I mean, the less bad), but a newbie (like me) cannot troubleshoot the jar's running problems...

by: Mikal613Posted on 2009-11-05 at 05:03:06ID: 25748946

when you execute the jar, there should be a default file association to install the jar.

by: asgarcymedPosted on 2009-11-05 at 05:21:03ID: 25749091

Yes, when I run the jar file, the default (pre-installed) "MIDlet Manager"/"Java Virtual Machine (JVM)" launches in order to install it. However, a bug appears: it always prompts for the gmail ID/password, even after I write them, it prompts again, in an "infinite loop"... And when I tried other "MIDlet Managers"/"Java Virtual Machines (JVMs)", other bugs occurred too: connection always failing, or absolutely frozen of the JVM (forcing me to kill it through the task manager), or always saying "unknow error!... exiting....".
It seems that running J2ME on Windows Mobile (WinMo) is really a pain, but Google never released a native WinMo PE-EXE to easily manage the gmail-specific features, like the "stars", "labels", shortcuts, and so on)...
Such situation is a despair to me, since I use gmail a lot, and WinMo is the best OS to me, for all the other mobile tasks I use to do frequently (read eBooks; browse the mobile web through Opera Mobile; run specific technical software only available for WinMo...).
That's the reason why I try not to give up: it is really important to me, to get gmail working fine on WinMo!

Finally it works!!! I could modify the cab (I deleted opera-related stuff and kept gmail), using the "WinCE CAB Manager", and now gmail works fine!
Although I still not knowing how make a CAB setup from a JAR, in a general way (procedure applicable to any JAR file), I could solve my current big problem (gmail), due to your help! Thanks a lot!
