Question

Fail to resume from Stand By (Windows XP)

Asked by: AlexCode

Hi...

After putting my windows Tablet into Stand By mode I can't resume it...
Right after the BIOS Toshiba logo desappears I only see the DOS cursor blinking at the upper left corner of my screen.

Is there a way I can start Windows normally or make that Stand By resume correctly?

Thanks,
Alex

Is your tablet pc DEP-enabled?
If so, please check this article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/889673

by: AlexCodePosted on 2007-04-16 at 04:01:42ID: 18916783

Hi... thanks for the reply.

I don't know if I have that DEP enabled because Windows doesn't even start...
After the BIOS logo desappears nothing eles happens except for that blinking cursor on the upper left corner.

I think the solution run by "telling" windows not the recover from Stand By but to start normally.

I already took off the battery to make sure nothing is left in memory but still no changes.

Thanks,
Alex

Can you press F8 directly after the BIOS logo disappears?

by: RubenvdLindenPosted on 2007-04-16 at 04:25:26ID: 18916866

In addition to my last post, after you've pressed F8 there should be a boot menu with the option:

"Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu."

If you select this option, Windows will no longer try to recover from standby mode and you should be able to boot normally.

by: AlexCodePosted on 2007-04-16 at 04:29:30ID: 18916874

No... it's strange but I tried it and nothig happens.
I don't know if that's possible on Stand By mode.

Thanks,
Alex

Yes, F8 should be available on resuming.
Please check this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/294427

However, since all you see is a blinking cursor (and not a progress bar with something like Windows is resuming), there might be some more damage.
Can you start the recovery console from the Windows XP cd?

Hi...

At first I suspected my HD to be damaged, but I removed it and accessed it from and external USB case and it works. The BIOS detects the HD too.
Î don't know what else could be wrong or damaged...

I can't start from the XP CD because my laptop is a Toshiba M200 with no internal CD drive.
Windows XP must be installed through PXE.

Thanks,
Alex

I think it's the bootsector or master boot record of your harddrive.
This article confirms my thoughts: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314503/en-us

Is there any way you can boot from a Windows XP boot floppy or a way to get to the recovery console (e.g. a USB floppy drive or cd drive)?
You can also try a repair installation through PXE.

I hope this helps.

by: AlexCodePosted on 2007-04-16 at 06:57:45ID: 18917669

I'll try the PXE repair...
If it doesn't work I'll have to reinstall the whole damn thing... ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Alex

by: RubenvdLindenPosted on 2007-04-16 at 07:24:38ID: 18917834

I hope that won't be necessary. Please let me know if the repair installation through PXE worked for you.

Good luck!

This is very odd...
I tried several things and none have worked.

1. Boot from PXE
It boots the image correctly to DOS mode where I would be able to make a Net Use to a share and start the XP installation but I can't find the C: drive. I got no C: drive.

2. Tried another HD
This HD has no operating system. It throws the noemal "Can't find the NTLDR" as expected.
So it seems that it gets to the HD.

Could it be the IDE controller?

Thanks...
Alex

Dumb me... the drive is formatted in NTFS, DOS can't handle this.
I'll try to use the NTFSDOS util or just format the HD in FAT32 and let the XP installation reformat it in NTFS.

by: AlexCodePosted on 2007-04-16 at 12:26:47ID: 18920079

After some more problems I got my HD formatted in FAT32 and the Windows install can now find the C: drive and proceed with the installation.

The process is running right now, I'll get back to you as soon as it's finished.

Many thanks for the help!

Alex

Hmm, the XP installation couldn't find your harddisk when booting from DOS?
I wouldn't expect that (although I always (re)installed booting from cd).

I hope it works for you!
