Question

"load needed DLLs for Kernel" error; unable to do repair of XP with 3rd party disk

Asked by: freshjuice

This is super nasty.

(Running Windows XP Pro Tablet PC from Fujitsu)

Although I have used it 100's of times previously without trouble, CrapCleaner has appartenly zapped my computer. I did a registry clean and now my computer won't start. The registry file is corrupt, and although I made a backup, I'm unable to access it. I'm getting the."load needed DLLs for Kernel" error. I'm unable to do a SafeMode boot.

Here's where things really get tricky:

1) Fujitsu only gives a "Restore State" disk, meaning that in order to repair windows using thier disk, I have to wipe that partition of the hard drive.
2) While the bulk of my files are on the D (non-boot) partiion, the file that matters most--the Outlook 2003 pst file--is on the Boot C partition. Because of this, a partition wipe is not a pleasant option.
3) When I tried to use another XP Pro Disk to do a repair install, it says that it "can't find the hard drive"...this may be due to the hard drive being SATA???
4) Because the Hard Drive is Sata, I do not have cords readly available to do any kind of Data dump
5) To compound things even worse, I'm in the middle of a house move, and I'm currently logistically in a fairly remote location. All I have are a) My Fujitsu Tablet/Laptop b) My wife's Dell Latitude D600 (which I'm usuing right now) c) internet access

You could perhaps boot to a Live Linux CD like Knoppix and access the drive to copy out valuable files like the *.pst files to the D: Drive.

I would avoid trying to do a Repair Install using another version of an XP CD, but you could access the "Recovery Console" from that CD and then use the handful of commands available.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

If you know the DLL's affected, then you have the EXPAND command where you could expand the affected file "filename.dl_" from the I386 folder of the CD to the System32 folder of the hard drive.

You may be able to run the System File Checker to restore missing system files:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/system_file_checker.mspx

Relevant Notes:
If sfc discovers that a protected file has been overwritten, it retrieves the correct version of the file from the %systemroot%\system32\dllcache folder, and then replaces the incorrect file.
If the %systemroot%\system32\dllcache folder becomes corrupt or unusable, use sfc /scannow, sfc /scanonce, or sfc /scanboot to repair the contents of the Dllcache directory.

Normally you need to supply a disk containing the SATA drivers and press F6 to load them when prompted as the system boots to an XP CD:

BillDL,

All your answers seem like they should work. I've been trying, this is what I've run into:

1) I downloaded Knoppix, but I must have done something wrong...it won't boot from the C I created from the ISO

2) I'm trying to get to the recovery console, and tried to set up a CD install that automatically loads SATA drivers, but I have one problem...I can't find any basic SATA drivers for download anywhere! Intel won't let me extract them onto this Dell (My Fujitsu is on a 915 chipset). I tried searching for drivers, bubt everyone references drivers tat are no longer available for download. Do you know where some basic ones are?

by: freshjuicePosted on 2007-05-01 at 00:26:50ID: 19006494

I should add: The HDD on the Fujitsu is a Hitachi TRavelstar, but Hitachis site says the drivers are already on the computer. ...BUt they offer no download!

What is the make and model number of the computer, or of the motherboard if the computer was a custom build.  If it's a Dell, then you should have a "Service Tag" alpha-numeric number on one of the stickers with a bar code.  Sometimes it is given as a numeric hyphen-separated "express service code" that can be converted.  The service tag number entered in the correct field on the Dell support site should give all the available drivers for that computer.

I found the driver on Intel, however, they don't offer them as a standalone now; they make the SATA driver part of a package install...a package install I can't access because I can't install it on this computer. Even the CAB file to the drivers are encrypted.

by: freshjuicePosted on 2007-05-01 at 08:23:58ID: 19009049

I should also add that I have no floppy Drive. so an "F6" installation is not an option. The Boot Disk must be able to load the SATA drivers or I'm dead in the water.

AHA!

On doing some research, I found that I just needed to turn off AHCI support for the SATA driver...now my hard drive is recognized...

Working on fixes now...

Manual Registry repair (if system restore is enabled) by venom96737[/quote]

I tried this butit didn't work. Where are the Load DLL'slocated in the recovery save, and where should I copy them?

by: johnb6767Posted on 2007-05-01 at 10:03:54ID: 19009885

Loaded dll's wasnt supposed to be fixed  by that post, it was a way to manually revert the registry to a previous date.....It would have resolved that key during the process....

They are in the System Volume Information>_restore>(Long GUID)Restore#

But if you dont know which ones youo need you might do more harm than good....

Now that the HDD is being recognized, I would suggest a repair install, since it didnt work before as it didnt see the hdd....

by: freshjuicePosted on 2007-05-01 at 10:19:24ID: 19009996

I tried the fix for the exact error message ("load needed DLLs for Kernel") as posted on Microsoft's site. Exanding the files did not fix the problem.

I'm doing a repair install as I type this.

...I'm wondering if the culprit was a virus and not CCleaner as I originally thought...

by: freshjuicePosted on 2007-05-01 at 10:29:26ID: 19010052

Hmmmmmm...

Or, just to confuse matters more...maybe it was due to an untested MS otfix for this problem?

Thank you freshjuice.  Glad to see you are on the way to recovery.

Incidentally, some of the *.exe installer packages for drivers from Intel are self-extracting *.exe's that can be unpacked using WinRAR in instances where WinZip won't work.  If that fails, I've sometimes gone through the first couple of prompt screens of the installer, then copied out the Temp files unpacked, and just cancelled the installation.  The older installer packages usually unpack useful temporary files that can be used to install drivers independently of the setup *.exe.
