Erratic mouse cursor on Lenovo X-41ThinkPad

Asked by tpe001 in Windows Tablet, PC Laptops

Having a recurring problem with erratic mouse cursor that moves to bottom right of screen and will click/open the time/clock in the system tray.
This problem is described (as well as various "fixes") on the below page:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?=&p=255097
I have tried everything recomended, as well as any and all Office/Lenovo/Microsoft updates, and nothing seems to work. Problem seems to arise mostly when CPU usage is above 80% but can occur at any time. (have even seen fixes requiring strips of foil to shield certain parts of the motherboard) Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Try booting the unit with a live CD (like Knoppix) that has a GUI with some programs that you can use to stress the CPU (OpenOffice, Firefox...). If the behaviour is there even in the Linux environment, you have a hardware problem. If not, you must look to windows-related drivers and other software that may have an impact on the touchpad/touchstick or whatever external pointing device is present.

I would start with all the hardware driver first.  It sounds like a hardware or a driver problem.  Can you pass this n! test?

Did you see this postfrom your link?:

Try this.... open up the MS calculator, switch it over to scientific mode and punch in a bunch of 9's. Hit the factorial button (n!) and then sit back and watch.

Does the mouse go crazy, jumping down to the taskbar and clicking?

If the answer is yes, call the help center and tell 'em to give you a new motherboard.

We had a few of the field sales guys complaining of this. Swapped out the motherboard, and they haven't complained since.

I had the same cursor problems with my X41T when it was new. Then Lenovo released a driver update on 9 Mar 2006 for the Intel Pro Wireless LAN 2200bg and 2915abg mini-PCI adapter (version 9.0.4.8) that claimed to fix this problem.

Guess what; It did! Now I can pass Riddil's 99999! calculator test without issue.

I don't understand how a wireless driver update is related to the cursor problem, but before updating I did note that the problem would disappear if I turned Wireless ON and reappear when I turned wireless OFF.

If your machines have the same wireless adapter you might want to look into this.
