In the process of solving a problem, I created a problem!
When I boot windows XP, it goes directly to an error that says "The Logon User Interface DLL vrlogon.dll failed to load. Contact your system administrator to replace the DLL, or restore the original DLL."
I boot then into safe mode wherein I'm presented with a logon screen that will not accept any of the valid logins that I know this computer should accept. It says, "The system could not log you on. Make sure your User name and domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters in password must be typed using the correct case."
I do have a laptop hard drive enclosure box, though, and I hooked it up and browsed for the file vrlogon.dll. There was one present on the computer in C:\Windows\System32\,
I've done a lot of reading on this and I've tried the following (and they've all failed)
1) Booting with the last known good configuration
2) Booting to safe mode with networking, logging on with a domain password
3) Replaced userinit.exe in the hopes that that would help.
I'm about to rename the damn vrlogon.dll file to see if it magically reappears. Wish me luck.

I've also tried running http://www.dougknox.com/ which seems to magically help those who are apparently less afflicted than myself. Obviously I can't run anything while I'm unable to log in, but put the file in place on the drive via the enclosure.

I should probably clarify that I encountered this problem while trying to solve a problem with our Citrix VPN Connection on this particular computer. (See: http://techrepublic.com.co
1) Open a command prompt as an Administrator on the PC (elevated prompt on Vista).
2)Run net stop CryptSvc.
3)Run esentutl /p %systemroot%\System32\catr
4)When prompted, choose OK to attempt the repair.
5)Reboot

Ah yes. Well. I made a boot disk. Windows claims that there is no hard drive. I can see everything when I take the hard drive out and connect it to my other computer, but I'm suspicious that I'm dealing with a corruption of a more global file and that vrlogon is just one of many symptoms.

Okay, so I have a Toshiba Portege M400-S5032X, windows xp tablet version. Hard drive does appear to be SATA, 100GB size. I'm running a HDD check on it now. What other stats can I provide?
It appears that maybe my problem is much bigger than I thought & I am adjusting the available points for this question. (I wish I had more to offer, but I'm afraid I'm using all my available points on this!)
Here's what I've done recently:
1) I moved the HDD to an enclosure and ran Recovery Console on it and ran fixboot, fixmbr, bootcfg /rebuild. Reinstalled HDD in computer, still had same problem. BUT it does appear that the RC will work on a hard drive attached via enclosure. If only I knew what to do in the RC to fix it!
2) Moved HDD to enclosure and attempted Repair Install, but Windows could not find the HDD. Gave me the following error: "Disks attached to a SCSI adapter are typically not visible to the start-up process", etc.
3) The bios on Toshibas (at least this one) appears pretty limited and I'm unable to see anything there that might allow the Repair Install to see the hard drive. Especially since RC can see it.

So, for those of you watching in the audience, renaming the file did not help. Now, in safe mode, you get the same error. Helpful? Anyone?
