I also use vmWare and recommend it highly.
FWIW, VirtualPC is now free: http://www.microsoft.com/w
I wouldn't be surprised, however, if some older apps like this start to fail under Vista.

Browse All TopicsCustomer has a 15 year old application that runs under the Access 2.0 runtime. It has been working great for many years under all previous versions of Windows and they are not keen to have to re-write it.
They report it installs but hangs on startup under Windows Vista.
Before investing a lot of time investigating this problem, I'd like to know if anyone know for sure whether or not Access 2.0 runs under Vista. No searching on Microsoft.com and elsewhere has turned up an explicit statement about this.
The obvious tactic of "well, install it and see!" is a challenge because I don't run Vista. I'd like to avoid installing an whole new OS just to see if this will work. So thanks for any input anyone has.

>> Use VirtualPC
Absolutely agree on that point. In fact I do use VPC for some testing but don't have a Vista VPC image. There is no doubt that I will be installing Vista and messing with this. That's not the issue.
The question is, does anyone know whether or not Access 2.0 is known to work or not work with Vista? If YES then I will forge ahead and spend time getting a Vista test image created. If NO then I won't waste time with it.

Access 2.0 is a Win 3.x application -- assume you already knew that.
Haven't tried myself, but have you checked into compatibilty mode in Vista? Allows a lot of old apps to run.
For curiosity's sake may install and see what happens provided I can find disks and they are still usable (3.5" media and old).
There is an Access 2.0 converter for Office 2003:

Or run the app on a terminal server like Thinsoft:

Answer: YES, Access 2.0 runs under Vista.
I have not yet narrowed down the exact problem but it looks like it may have been the use of SendKeys to stuff the keyboard. Could be related to some WinAPI calls as well. I commented out some startup code that wasn't critical to the app and now it's up and running just fine. I'm sure I'll encounter more unsupported behaviors but the core Access 2.0 functionality definitely works under Vista.

Hi,
actually, I would answer that question with "well, install it and see" with the addition of "install it in VMWare or Virtual PC emulation, and see it."
I use VMWare alot and extensively to test situations like that. simply powerful.
