I have taken ownership of documents and setting on my vista ultimate, and given full control to myself, but I still can not access the folder. I wouldn't really care, but microsoft is still putting outlook.pst within this folder. how would you back it up if you don't have access to it. besides other obvious issues. either microsoft has to stop putting important data files where they can't be accessed, or give access to these folders. supposedly they had given up the c:\folder\dolder\file format in vista, but look at outlook 2007's file location listed in properties.

yes, I can see the local setting and application folders, but neither the documents and setting folder nor any hidden or system folders can be accessed. I changed the ownership of docs and settings, and gave full access to the folder, but when looking at effective permissions, full control is not checked. so while when looking a permissions full control is checked I don't really have that permission.
I've got it figured out. somehow everyone of these folders has an everyone deny permission set on it. I finally figured out how to change that without changing the other permissions, like system, etc. I don't know why the permissions are set to everyone deny. but if I delete that I then have access.
the steps are to go into properties, security, advanced, edit, remove the deny everyone setting.
but you have to do each one, individually. what a pain. I don't know if this is because this was an upgrade from xp, or what caused this setting to be created. Interesting that you did not see this on your version of vista. I also have ultimate installed.

I reinstalled vista from scratch, nothing on this computer any way. I wanted to see the default condition of permissions. After I allowed the hidden and system files and folders to be viewed, I was blocked from access to documents and settings. I am an admistrator on this local machine which is not part of domain. the user everyone has two special permissions, one is to deny list / read data. I removed the deny permission. and check replace permissions on decendants. I could then open documents and setting, but when I tried to open applications data under all user, and under my user name I was denied access. the deny permission is marked not inherited. so each layer down you have to remove this deny permission. I selected this is an office computer as my installation choice. I don't remember any other choices. This seems to be the default setting, and I don't see a way to clear this deny everyone permission that is set in many of the hidden or system folders. like application data, and local settings. now microsoft has added a new folder called appdata, which may hold the outlook data, I'm not sure I haven't reinstalled office yet, that is not protected like application data. but you still have to get into doctuments and settings.
Now that I have reinstall vista and office, I see that the data is available in the appldata folder. Internestingly, that folder was not visible in my previous incarnation. but that incarnation was an upgrade of release candidate 1, which was an upgrade of xp pro. so I assume it is not a good Idea to allow access to application data, documents and settings, etc.
Some of the those folders are actually junctions to other folders.
Junctions are kind of like shortcuts but at a filesystem/kernel level.
Those junctions have deny permissions because you aren't suppose to access them directly, they are only there for older programs that hard code the path to use.
Here are some of those links in Vista and where they point:
In the C:\ Drive:
Documents and Settings -> Users
In your profile C:\Users\[UserName]:
Application Data -> Appdata/Roaming
Local Settings -> Appdata/Local
My Documents -> Documents
So if Outlook said the files were in "C:\Documents and Settings\[UserName]\Applic

Have you modified your display settings in Windows Explorer?
(Tools, Folder Options, View) to make sure that Hidden and System files are being displayed?
I just looked in my profile to see if I could duplicate the problem, but everything displays and I have access.
