The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

The thing is I just walked over a a XP box and setup the outlook to use rpc over http and it works great.

instead of connecting to http://server.domain.com/rpc, try connecting to https://server.domain.com/rpc

Do you get a certificate error?

Does the XP machine actually work?  If you close outlook on the XP machine, and then open it with "Start > Run > Outlook /rpcdiag" does it connect with TCP/IP or HTTPS?

03.09.2007 at 04:25AM PST, ID: 18686617
Yes did try both before sending the reply.

>>ie explore does say cert yata yata continue

That is your problem, your cert is not installed.

Open IE as an administrator (press shift, the right click on an IE shortcut and choose Run as Administrator)
Browse to the site again, click continue, then up the top in the address bar, click the certificate error, view certificate
Then, install certificate, browse for location, view physical stores, Trusted Root CAs > Local Computer

Ok all the way out.

It still comes up with a certificate prompt?

When you view the certificate, why is it having an error?  (Trusted, Name, or Expired)

Cert work on xp np try on a another pc np. It has to be vista

03.11.2007 at 03:39PM PDT, ID: 18698689

Rank: Genius

I agree, which is why I want to know why it is rejecting the cert - obviously the cert is working as you have XP clients without a problem, so again, what is it complaining about?

03.11.2007 at 06:05PM PDT, ID: 18699043
Well after the install you recommended, no complains just keeps asking for password when outlook is trying to attach

03.11.2007 at 06:08PM PDT, ID: 18699052

Rank: Genius

OK, so now you don't get a certificate prompt at all when you go to https://server.domain.com/rpc?

That is a start, if that is the case, then don't bother entering a username and password - nothing is going to work, the only reason we do this test is to make sure that the site is there, and that the certificate is installed.

If you try outlook now, same problem?

03.11.2007 at 06:23PM PDT, ID: 18699094
yes same problem

make these 2 registry changes:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/899148

I've had the same problem, and this has fixed it.

You installed those registry edits and tested it all in 3 minutes?

Wow...

11.29.2007 at 09:14AM PST, ID: 20375262
I have the same problem with Vista Home and these registry keys do not exist in my registry. I created them, but this didn't resolve the problem. Vista Home needs a different solution, if one exists. I am giving up for now.

11.29.2007 at 10:59AM PST, ID: 20376236
Those registry keys aren't going to work anyway.

And I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure it was only available with XP Pro, so I am not surprised that Vista Home can't do it...

12.04.2007 at 12:48PM PST, ID: 20406276
Red, are you trying to say that RPC over http will never work in Vista Home? I havn't found anything that backs up that theory, although the thought has crossed my mind since Vista Home, like XP Home, doesn't include domain support.

Since my last post, I found and tried other registry fixes, such as this one, but nothing helped:
http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/showpost.aspx?postid=1219596&siteid=1&sb=0&d=1&at=7&ft=11&tf=0&pageid=1

I now have concluded the problem has to be with the certificate, so I will follow the advise from this EE discussion:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Windows/Windows_Vista/Q_22577103.html?eeSearch=true

Hopefully, whoever reads this discussion can skip my aggrevation, skip the above "accepted answer" and go straight to the real solution...

I will report back once I know whether a commercially issued certificate can fix this, or if it's a Vista Home vs. Vista Business edition issue.

12.04.2007 at 12:56PM PST, ID: 20406379
You can test to see if it is a cert error easy enough,

https://yourserver.yourdomain.com/rpc

Does it give you a warning about a certificate?  If so, then it is never going to work.

http://www.certificatesforexchange.com for godaddy (i think) cert.

As for RPC/HTTP on Vista Home, I haven't seen anything saying it can't be done...

12.06.2007 at 09:59AM PST, ID: 20421630
It's fixed, I got the solution. I have not seen anyone on EE suggesting this, so hopefully this is not duplicating someone else's effort...

(using Vista Home Premium and IE 7)
Run IE as administrator or turn off User Access Controls. (do not run IE as the user, even if the user is an administrator)
Turn off all pop up blockers.
Browse to the OWA site or http://mailserver.domain/remote
The certificate warning will be presented. Click on the Continue option, marked with red. The address bar will now have a red background.
Use the dialog here to import the certificate. A warning will appear ("You are about to install a certificate from a certification authority (CA) claiming to represent...")
Click on yes, place the certificate in the Trusted Root Certification Authority.
That will do it. Open Outlook to see that its working. Be aware it will prompt for domain\username and password.

I called Microsoft Business Critical Technical Support and spoke to a consultant called Hardeep Saluja. I am mentioning his name because he was very helpful and can perhaps be referenced by others in trying to get this resolved.

What needs to happen is that the certificate needs to be added to the Trusted Root Certification Authority by using admin rights. Before then, I was not seeing the certificate in the list in Internet Options->Content->Certificates->Trusted Root Certification Authorities. You can import all you want, get the "import successful" box, and yet, you will not have the certificate installed. At least that's what happened to me using Vista Home Premium and IE7. Even importing the certificate using MMC with the certificates snap-in and actually seeing it in the Trusted Root Certification Authority container did not make it appear in Internet Options.

One other thing we did is added read permissions for the current user in this Registry key:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\System Certificates\Root\Protected Roots\
(right click on the key, go to permissions)

Happy RPC-ing...

Also helpful:
Someone (not me) did all the legwork already and made a nice document on how to import a certificate in Vista as well as how to create a GPO to make the above task transparent to the end user.

http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2007/04/10/installing-a-self-signed-certificate-as-a-trusted-root-ca-in-windows-vista.aspx

12.06.2007 at 11:35AM PST, ID: 20422419
Sorry, I thought you were aware how to install certificates in IE.

Also, for clarity, you don't have to turn off UAC to install the cert - you would then have to right click the IE icon, and choose run as administrator.

Of course, turning off UAC is never a terrible idea anyway :)
