Browse All TopicsI am absolutely livid about Windows Vista...I purchased two Gateway units with SATA 380G HD. I found out that Inventor 10 Pro will not run with Vista and I am trying to reformat and install XP Pro. According to Gateway there is no way I can do this because the SATA drive doesn't have a driver that comes with the retail version of XP Pro that is compatable with this new ST3320820AS drive. I am about to blow a fuse. Windoze Vista is not compatable with Netware or is it compatable with AutoCAD Inventor Pro. I need help installing Windows XP so I can get these boxes running by Tuesday. Is there something that can be done. HELP Please!!

If it's a single drive or multiple drives not in a RAID array, SATA controller is already set to IDE mode in BIOS.
For XP SP2, some SATA controllers may not require F6 drivers (e.g. Intel ICH5 and later and nVidia GeForce3-250 and later),
Hence question about model so we can determine what hardware you have.
please realize tha NO WINDOWS OS (priot to vista) comes with native SATA drivers built into the OS.
Therefore you MUST find SATA drivers for the SATA controller (NOT THE HARD DISK -- the controller) before you can install XP.
I have NOT yet seen a SATA controller that you cannot find a driver for, for the XP OS. I think you are mixing apples with lemons here -- the SATA controller is what needs the driver for XP, not the HDD>
FIND THE SATA DRIVERS FOR THE CONTROLLER.
Put them on a floppy disk and instert it into the A drive
Boot XP from the CD and when it starts, immediately press F5 several times
It will automatically look on the A: drive for sata controller drivers.
If you picked the right one, it will find the driver, and installation will proceed PERFECTLY OK.
If you have a laptop with no FDD, you are SCREWED, unless you make a SLIPSTREAM CD of XP with the right drivers installed into the right locations on the CD>
Oh and BTW -- there is no such thing as installing XP over Vista -- can you install DOS over Win3.11 -- NO, I don't think so.
YOu totally wipe out vista and format the hard drive, and THEN install XP on it. Why suffer vista, when you can enjoy a stable XP??

Hey guys, All of your suggestions are indeed helpful. I did find a SATA Controller driver for XP from Intel since the controller is on the MB and it is an Intel Chipset. I am reformatting hard drive right now. I loaded the SATA drivers via floppy drive as you stated. This SATA drive is set up as a RAI drive, and I have installed driver for the RAID controller. I am formatting HD as NTFS and trying to install XP SP1. Since this unit had no floppy and with XP you are required to load driver (F6) from floppy, I had to go to Wally World and pick up a USB floppy drive. It worked great. I will report more later and award points as I see fit.
I am having luck reformatting and yes I realize that you cannot install XP over vista but lacking the correct terminology I wanted to broadcast my problem so that perhaps I could get a response quickly. I also realize that is was not the SATA drive that I needed a driver for when I went to the Seagaet site and it stated the same. I just had trouble locating the correct SATA controller driver. But now that I have it...Are you stating that I should not have it set in BIOS for RAID? I have it formated now and XP loaded but I have to reinstall drivers for all the hardware.
"Are you stating that I should not have it set in BIOS for RAID?"
NO, you set the SATA as the primary boot in the BIOS, and if this is RAID, remember you need at least 2 drives to get it working. The crucial thing is that you MUST have the right DRIVERS for the SATA controller you are dleaing with, whether plain SATA or RAID SATA -- and these must be available on some media right when XP boots from the CD. YOu can also put them on the HDD, but it would have to be an IDE drive if so, because the XP OS MUST find the SATA controller DRIVERS BEFORE it can see the device, is this clear??
I absolutely understand the process of F6 and installing the controller drivers and I have been successful doing so. The drive is also a single drive set up as a RAID for whatever that is worth. The box is working now. I am wondering now if I should set the drive to IDE or is that necessary. Anyway, I did some digging and came up with the SATA controller driver made by Intel and all is well except for drivers for audio. Do you think the Vista audio driver will work with XP SP2?
I expect XP will detect the audio automatically, it does for 90% of audio -- so give it a shot, and if you need drivers, you can always ask here.
You would only set the primary boot device to IDE if that is what you want to boot from, otherwise leave it as the SATA RAID, which is how you intend to use it, correct? YOu can't really have a single drive as a RAID -- if you are using windows DYNAMIC disk (software RAID emultation) -- please DO NOT do this. You will end up regretting ever using windows "dynamic disk" -- D is for disaster.
The only reliable RAID is a hardware RAID of at least 2 drives. If you have only ONE SATA drive, do not run it as a RAID -- run it as a single disk. Many RAID controllers can handle a single SATA disk, like ASUS. It might be you are confusing a single drive on a RAID controller with a RAID array. They are very different. You can put a single SATA drive on many RAID controllers and run it as a single disk. If this is what you have, then this is what you want to do. DO NOT use windows "dynamic disk".
Well, the computer came with the HD set up as a RAID device(?) It is a Gateway commercial unit GT5438 and I abhor Vista with my first taste. I spit it out and now have XP pro loaded and runing. Since this is an OEM board with onboard Audio (Sigmatel) the driver seems to be unavailable for XP. I tried the Sigmatel driver for Vista and it blew up. It seems that Sigmatel has dozens of drivers available but none t0o match my OS/Audio chip situation. I bit the bullet and put a $30 soundcard in. I am just spinning my wheels looking for the correct driver.
The first 2 here are XP --

This is just a BASIC ESS sound card, hell, they have been out for over 12 years, nothing special, also see --
