CRC Errors and Corrupt Files on ASUS A8V-X

Hello,

Before you ask me I've tested all hardwares (Hard Drives and Ram Sticks) mentioned below in another motherboard and all of it doesn't gave any error or problems.

I've bought this Motherboard 4 months ago and choose it mostly because I had a brand new GeForce 6800 XT AGP. After some research seems the only board that accept a Socket 939 with a AGP VGA.

Anyway after installed Windows Vista I started to get BSOD complainings about Memory Management, PFN_LIST_CORRUPT, and some corrupted system files. Also I got a lot of CRC Errors when transfering files from one folder to another (inside de same Hard Drive), from one Hard Drive (IDE) to the other (SATA) or even from a media CD to the Hard Drive. Also the same CRC Errors happens when transfering files from one computer to another through the Network.
 
I decided to investigate the issue and a lot of articles in the Internet showed me that could be a Ram issue. I run Windows Vista Memory Diagnostics Tool and noticed a lot of errors. Just to be sure Ive downloaded the MemTest86 v1.7 and this program also gave me errors after testing the memory.
I've started to change some Ram settings in the Bios and after lot of tests I've found that the Ram only runs fine as DDR333 and as single channel. I do not have problem with that since this is the secondary machine and it will be use only for Internet, Some Low Games and Office stuff.
I reformated the machine and everything is fine (No More BSODs or Memory Management complains) except for transfering files from one folder to another (inside de same Hard Drive), from one Hard Drive (IDE) to the other (SATA) or even from a media CD to the Hard Drive. Also the same CRC Errors happens when transfering files from one computer to another through the Network or even when I download files from the Internet.
Note that this happen mostly with big files (50MB +) and only few times with small files.
Now I'm stuck with this issue. I have the latest BIOS. I've also get the latest VIA Drivers for SATA, IDE and NIC (Via Rhine Onboard). Tried all those hardwares with native Windows Vista drives. None of this worked.

Any advice on BIOS Settings to see if I can fix this issue? All Drives Settings on BIOS are set as Default and the only one that is disabled is the 32Bit Data Transfer. I've set to enable but the issue still remains.

About checking the Hard Drives? I did. I've downloaded de Seagate SeaTools and run all tests and found NO ERRORS. Also I've tested those drivers in my other machine. No issues as well. :-(

Do you get crc errors on transfers from either h.d. to a networked machine? If so, then your problem most likely does not involve the drives themselves, but some common system component in the data path e.g. south bridge, pci bus, RAM. You could try increasing memory latency settings in BIOS in case your RAM is still not working correctly. You might also check south bridge temperature and psu voltages: both an overheating bridge chip and an overloaded power supply can lead to random errors. The final possibility is that you got a lemon of a motherboard and nothing you do is going to get it to work right.

If you only get errors on transfers that involve one of the hard drives, then you problem most likely is with that drive or its data cable. I've seen Seatools pass hard drives that had problems. Try HDAT2 and in particular use it to look at the smart status log. Look for a large number of dma ecc errors. If these are present, try a different h.d. cable and then drive. If these replacements make no difference, manually set udma mode in BIOS. Try lowering udma mode one step at a time, or as a last resort set it to PIO mode.

These troubleshooting steps assume that you're dealing with a hardware issue, but its still possible that you're dealing with an o.s. or driver bug. You might try running XP or Linux on this machine to rule out this possibility.

Sorry for the long list of troubleshooting steps, but the problem you're having can be caused by quite a few hardware and software issues.

Boths drives (IDE 80 GB) and (SATA 250 GB) on this machine are giving me errors when transfering files between them. Also I'm getting the same errors when transfering files from another computer to any of those two drives.

I've tested both drives on another machine and they are fine (No CRC errors when transfering files). I've ran also Prime95 (for 5 hours) and MemTest86 and (for 12 hours) and No errors or warinings. I will considering the possibity of an overloaded power supply (ordered already) or a Lemon Motherboard ( on this case I will ask for a RMA). Anyway, I will let you know about the progress.

i was thinking of the disk controllers on the motherboard, but since they pass the test, it must be the mobo or cpu ; can you swap in another cpu for testing ?

Nah. It will give too much trouble to do that. I will check the power supply and if it is not the problem I will probably buy another Mobo.

Just tested the system with a BRAND NEW Power Supply. Problem transfering files remains :-(

Also I've being checking  the MB, CPU and HD temperatures and are ALL OK. Even the the South and North Bridges seems not overheat.

So...I'm going to buy a new Mobo but before that I was wondering if anyone knows any software that can check PCI Bus?

It was a Lemon Motherboard afterall. I did the RMA and received the nem Mobo last friday. Exchanged the Mobo and not even needed to reinstall Vista.
