Question

Calling Google is bringing up MSN ... calling MSN is bring up Double Click Net ... strange things are happening ...

Asked by: Raisor

Hi,

Up to now I thought I could call myself an expert even in "Spy/Ad/or whatever"-ware ... I used to work a lot with traffic exchange programs in the past and whenever I was auto-surfing I've catched a huge number of crabby applications ... cleaning up the pc manually was an every day task though ...

... now I'm having a problem on my development computer which I've never used in any risk ... it's a Vista Enterprise edition with every development program you can imagine ... and on this system I can not use Internet Explorer 7.0 nor Firefox 2.0 ... whenever I start a browser, my landing pages are different ...

I've checked with the latest version of Microsoft's "Malicious Software Detection", with "F-Secure BlackLight Beta", with "SuperAntiSpyware" and with "SpyBot - Search % Destroy" ... I've discussed that problem in the appropriate "Google Groups" section ... and all without a result ...

I know that most people will say "reinstall windows from the scratch" ... but that's not an option ... it would take me days to reinstall everything on my development system ...backup and recover all databases and projects ... and so on ... if I'd reinstall everything and the same thing would happen again ... well, I'd be bypassing so many project deadlines that I'd be dead ...

If anyone has heard of an issue like mine I'd like to get into a discussion ...

Best regards,
Raisor

Greetings Raisor !

Some website has hijacked your homepage.

1. Use the following scanners to find and remove the website.

Ewido
http://www.ewido.net/en/
or
Spy Sweeper
http://mysite.webroot.com/forms/Infoworld

2. Some shopping and porn websites redirects links to their websites using your HOSTS file. Do a search for the HOSTS (without extension) file and remove the entry.

HOSTS file is located in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC. It is a hidden file, so you need to unhide hidden files to see it. Go to any folder and select Tools > Folders Options > View. Check "Show hidden files and folders". Click OK.

3. If still no joy, download HijackThis, as lacrewga indicated.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Run the program and you will find many entries. Most are OK. Post the log at http://www.hijackthis.de/ and click Analyse, Save.  Post a link to the saved list here.

Best wishes, war1

Hi,

thanks to both of you for helping on this issue!

Unfortunately -> I haven't found any information regarding a 'Hijacker' ...

@war1 -> by the way, I'm the developer of the 'Beware The Web' freeware, that you'll find on a simple name research at google ... there's no porn around here and no shopping too ... only development behind hard- and software firewalls ... having state of the art virus and spyware protection ... but to tell you, my Host file has the following entries:

127.0.0.1       localhost
::1             localhost

... if it would be that easy I'd surely not asked here :) ...

... anyway, I'm not sure what else to try or to do ... it all started on the 11th of July after a huge Vista update by Microsoft ... I wonder if it has something to do with this update (bug?) and if this happend to others too!?

Here's the full hijack log:

Raisor,

I ran an analysis of your HijackThis log at http://hijackthis.de  then saved the result and posted a link to the result here.
http://hijackthis.de/logfiles/1b743ec9a2f94c51c676d3e1cd487043.html

Check the box next to the following items and have HijackThis "Fix Checked".

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

If EDVBRK.DOM domain is not what you installed, have HJT remove them.

Hi,

Isn't "O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)" a SpyBot entry? ... and on both "023" I did a "Fix Checked" -> they both remained ...

Best regards,
Raisor

by: war1Posted on 2007-07-14 at 12:19:10ID: 19487920

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file) is an item with file removed.  So I was just cleaning up.

7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045 is the BHO for Live Messenger. Did you recently uninstall Live Messenger.

The last 2 items are file missing type of entries, so also was cleaning up. inetsrv\iisres.dll is a Microsoft Information Services item.  But I am not sure why it will not delete.

by: RaisorPosted on 2007-07-14 at 14:37:12ID: 19488231

Hi,

What I've uninstalled was the 'Live Toolbar' ... and I've uninstalled a couple of other ie controls (del.icio.us etc.) -> of which I thought they could be the reason for this hassle ...

... what do you think about a MS 'bug'? ... as this only happens on Vista! ... and absolutely no spyware is detected ... by many anti spyware programs ...

Best regards,
Raisor

by: war1Posted on 2007-07-14 at 15:53:59ID: 19488401

Raisor,

This is strange. Vista is suppose to be more secure than XP.

by: RaisorPosted on 2007-07-15 at 00:15:22ID: 19489308

Hi,

yep, that's what I thought when I placed this question ... "... strange things are happening!"

After emptying the ie cache and after a restart it did not happen again ... and, at least I can say that there's no obvious spyware on my system ... and I'll see what the Google Groups are saying on that subject ...

So thanks to both of you experts for the hint with HiJackThis ... I'll split the points in a 90:10 relation in favor of war1 ... lacrewga suggested the tool first, but war1 went through the usage and helped analyzing the results ...

Best regards,
Raisor

by: war1Posted on 2007-07-15 at 07:44:42ID: 19490531

Raisor,

Glad the problem is gone.  Rebooting the computer fixes many problems.  Thanks for the points.

by: RaisorPosted on 2007-07-15 at 09:34:18ID: 19490858

Hi,

gosh ;) ... if it would always be just about rebooting (like in the old days when we were supporting Win95) ...

... no, I've had a blue screen earlier today but haven't had the time yet to analyze the reason for it ... I'd guess that I have some hardware troubles causing these strange effects of browser behavior ... as it happens on IE 7.0 as well as on Firefox 2.0 ... can't be sure of course ... but I'm glad not to have any malware found by all those tiny programs I've installed in the past 48 hours ... can't tell you about my personal "trust-level" on all that programs -> wonder what I've catched while installing them ... *lol* ...

Thanks for all your suggestions!
Best regards,
Raisor
