Vista PC full backup fails - I/O error

I am running Windows Complete PC Backup to backup my Toshiba Satellite VA9 notebook running Windows VISTA ultimate to an external USB hard drive. This has worked with no problems in the past but now I keep getting an error:

Backup failed:
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error (0x8007045D).Start Free Trial
