Have had this error twice now, when starting an Acronis full system backup to my dedicated 300GB backup disk - there are dozens of these errors around the times that I kick off the backup. Could this indicate a bad drive?

well I have tried it on my backup drive, reported no errors. Will continue to try it on the others. Fairly worrying however, as I havent been able to complete a system backup and I deleted my old backups as I had run out of space! Not only that, Im running my Vista install and program files off a RAID 0 array....
found out what the problem was
I started by deleting the partition and recereating it on my backup disk, performing a full format. I then started to copy large files to the drive through explorer and monitored event viewer for errors. There were none, so I then started to perform a small backup with acronis onto the drive and again monitored the event logs for errors. When I saw that none had been logged, I then went back to my original backup job that was causing errors. Upon starting it, errors were logged int he event log. I looked at the settings for the backup job and set the priority to medium (it was set to high) and set the compression to medium (also set to high). The job can now be run succvessfully with no errors.
I have also since run scan disk on all drives with no errors reported.
