Vista Business cannot resolve local DNS names

I have upgraded to using Windows Vista in my home environment (workgroup, no domain). I store my files on the family server \\srv01\, also reachable under \\192.168.3.20\

I can open the server by typing \\192.168.3.20\ into the address bar, but not by typing \\srv1\. I have added the server to the \windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts - file, but somehow Vista does not want to read this. Same problem with another local server: server name does not find computer, ip-address does.

DNS to all web servers works fine.

Try opening notepad with administrative privileges, than open the host file.  

or you could enable NetBIOS, that may also work.

You probably need to turn Network discovery on.
How:
1. Open Control Panel
2.
If in normal mode Click "View network status and tasks" under "Network and Internet".
If in Classic view open "Network and Sharing Center"
3. Under "Sharing and Discovery" click "Network discovery"
4. Click "Turn on network discovery"
5. Click apply
