The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Slow Internet with IE Timeouts: HP Pavilion Laptop with Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN
Tags: Microsoft, Windows Vista, Home Premium, HP, Pavilion Laptop, dv6636nr, Wireless Card: Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN
I received the following email from my boss who has an HP Pavilion laptop model dv6636nr with Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN: "my internet is really slow no matter where or how Im connected.  Almost everything times out, no matter what website I go to."

Of course very vague, so I asked for clarification and she told me that it is occurring in multiple wireless locations, she has not (or cannot) try an ethernet connection to reproduce issue, and received "Internet Page not available" error (or something to that effect).

I have read about disabling an auto control feature in Vista and also disabling IPv6. Should I try both or one at a time? What steps should I take to troubleshoot this issue? We are using FortiClient 3.0.470 for firewall and antivirus.

I should add that we have a virtual consulting company and employees travel all over with their laptops (who doesn't these days?). So, she's most-likely connecting to the Internet via a hotel's WAP or Starbucks, perhaps a client site, etc. (in other words, we don't have access to the router).

Another update: Apparently after closing Microsoft Office Outlook 2007, the user's connection performed much faster. I am also recalling that whenever the user would launch Outlook 2007 there would be 2 separate instances that would open each time. This appears to be an issue related to that. Perhaps I should close this issue and post somewhere else? Please advise. Thank you.

You need to try a wired connection to make sure it's the wireless connection causing the slowness
http://ask-leo.com/can_i_open_more_than_one_instance_of_outlook_at_a_time.html
Could be related to the router formware. try updating the firmware
or replacing the firmware with an open source version as some routers do not play nice with Vista

Since this is Vista seems a bug with wireless refreshing the ip adresses.
Vista has also incorperated Windows Filtering Platform, I have disabled this feature to assist in internet speeds.

Disabling IPv6 in Vista
Note: Due to misconfigured DNS servers on the Internet, computers that use both IPv4 and IPv6 might not be able to resolve names and connect to Internet resources

Wireless Single Sign-On

I am noticing this same problem on my XP system with Outlook 2007. If Outlook 2007 is open, eventually access to websites in Internet Explorer is impossible--resulting in the typical "page cannot be displayed" error. As soon as Outlook is closed out, Internet connectivity is restored.

thank you. :)

Merete: I performed the first 3 steps you suggested, but not the fourth (because the PC is not joined to a an A/D domain). The user still notices that Internet performance can slow to a crawl, but as soon as she closes Outlook 2007, all is well. What should I try now?

Also, more specifically, SSL logins almost always fail if Outlook is open and almost always work immediately after closing Outlook. I'm guessing this might have to do with the connection to the Exchange server?

I have noticed a considerable slowness with the internet opening pages.
maybe related to the amount of online video streaming from what I have read it's world wide.
More live sports etc P2P.
IE7 is a big problem test using firefox often helps, if the new add ons in IE7 are disabled one by one to see if any are interferring.

Vista also has lots of  isues with  slow internet and wireless.

Could also be over bloated outlook emails.
No corrupted DBX files?
If the store folder grows to huge dimensions that is.
Their offline files are too big.

Do they have Mcfee or NAV?
From MS
More specifically, it was the Phishing Filter. Both IE7 and McAfee have Phishing Filters, which I dare say is too much 'protection' for anyone's party. Once I disabled the McAfee filter (but left the IE filter running)

try switching  off IPV6
Configuring IPv6 with Windows Vista
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb878057.aspx
uninstall Mcfee. NAV.
Disable the UAC.
Stop the firewall temporary.

Well a few things to try.
Hope something brings you success
Cheers

Merete: Thank you for the additional information. We are not using McAfee or NAV--we use FortiClient for our Antivirus/VPN/Firewall solution. I will try disabling  the Outlook add-ins. Could you please explain or provide me with info on how to check the following:

Is your Boss using Outlook/Outlook Express or Windows Mail?
Sorry there is so many these days.

I would simply move store folder.
Locate it first make a copy of it and save to a different location. Then Create a storefolder.
By default, this storage folder is placed on the C drive, under your username in the AppData\Local\Microsoft\ Windows Mail directory. If you want to move the folder to a different location, follow these steps:
1. Click Tools and select Options.
2. Select the Advanced tab.
3. In the Maintenance and Troubleshooting section, click the Maintenance button.
4. In the Maintenance dialog box, click the Store Folder button.
5. In the Store Location dialog box, click the Change button.
6. Browse to the desired location and click OK.
7. Click OK to close the Store Location dialog box.
8. Click Close to close the Maintenance dialog box.
9. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.

I don't how to run any maintinence with Vista offline files.

I just wanted to comment that this issue was resolved by an updated release of FortiClient 3.0 MR6. Outlook 2007 causing performance issues is listed in release note fixes.

Thank you kindly for that it's really appreciated.
You're welcome to also ask  the community advisor zone to have the accepted answer moved to your comment and solution.
Or even a multiple accept how's that.
Then when others looking for this solution will see yours.
All the best :)
