First off you need to enable Internet connection shaing on the host computer, (which i'm assuming is connected via Wire to the internet. If you do the walk through that should be it.

SpYd3r05, I think you are right on target. But unfortunately I don't know how to enable that in Vista. Can you please guide me through this?

Alternativly the best solution it buying a wireless router, in my opinion ICS is just a temp solution, and isnt as reliable. but here are the instructions anyways

1.

Open Network Connections by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, clicking Network and Sharing Center, and then clicking Manage network connections.
2.

Right-click the connection that you want to share, and then click Properties. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3.

Click the Sharing tab, and then select the Allow other network users to connect through this computers Internet connection check box.
NoteThe Sharing tab will not be available if you have only one network connection.
4.

If desired, you can also select the Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection check box.
5.

Optionally, to allow other network users to use services running on your network, click Settings and select the services you want to allow.

When you enable ICS, your local area network (LAN) connection gets a new static IP address and configuration, so you'll need to reestablish any TCP/IP connections between your host computer and the other network computers.

To test your network and Internet connection, see if you can share files between computers and make sure each computer can reach a website.

I am not sure why, but I am not able to follow the above steps.

The internet connection is "Network 2". But it doesn't have sharing tab.

>> NoteThe Sharing tab will not be available if you have only one network connection.

So how do I move forward now?

is buying a router a possibility?

by: mgh_mgharishPosted on 2008-03-12 at 11:40:46ID: 21109306

The connection we are having is a WiMax connection. It's a weird type since we have to login to the ISP using a website before continuing to use the internet. So if we use a router, we will have to connect cable to ethernet port, login to that page, disconnect ethernet cable and then connect the cable to router. I don't want to do this everytime I need to share the connection.

I am sure I am missing a simple point here. Even if we leave the internet connection apart, we should be able to connect the two machines using LAN right? But I can ping XP machine from Vista, but not vice versa. What might have gone wrong in this case?

(FYI, this pinging problem exists even if we connect through ethernet cable instead of Wireless LAN)
