The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

opening word docs on server 2003 SBS via unc fails on first attempt
Tags: microsoft, windows, vista, opening word docs on server 2003 SBS via unc fails
I've got a user that recent made the move to vista and office 2007. When she browses to a network share via unc and attempts to open a word doc on \\server\share\subfolder1\subfolder2\subfolder3\subfolder4\ ....she gets a message saying "windows cannot find '\\server\share\subfolder1\subfolder2\subfolder3\subfolder4\some file.doc' Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again"

she click OK and double-clicks the file again...and it opens in word.

It doesn't matter if she uses unc or a mapped drive. there are two other users in that office who have the same configuration, but do not experience the issue.

Scratch that...she says it only happens when using UNC...the error does *not* appear when using a mapped drive.

First thing I would check is that the network adapter of her PC has only your internal DNS server listed under DNS servers, and not the ISP, even as an alternate. This is a very common source of similar problems.

If that is OK try connecting using the fully qualified domain name such as:
\\server.mydomain.abc\share\sub....
If that works, add the domain suffix mydomain.abc to the users network adapter under DNS suffix, of the DNS tab of the advanced TCP/IP properties of the network adapter

It that doesn't help :-)  Does she have multiple network adapters, such as a wired and wireless?  If so make sure the one being used for this connection is at the top of the binding order. See: control panel | network connections | on the menu bar - advanced | advanced settings | adapters and bindings

03.27.2008 at 04:30PM PDT, ID: 21226770
Only one adapter.
I tried putting the FQDN in there and windows told me it was an invalid path.
I did have one of the ISP's dns servers in as the secondary dns. I took that out.
...no change in results.

I did figure out a new twist, however. It's not nessecarily that the error appears the first time and not the second. It's whether Word is already open or not. If Word is already open...no error.
If you try to open a doc without word it open...it bombs, leaves word open and puts the windows showing the files to the front. That's why the user said it worked fine on the second attempt.

Very odd. Might be a Word problem based on your last comment, rather than a resolution problem. Have you tried running "detect and repair" from the Word help menu option?

Does it also happen with a short path on the server?
If yes, like Rob says, repair word. It sometimes makes a difference how, I would uninstall and reinstall word. If still persistent: install the SP1 for both office 2007 and vista.

None of the previously submitted solutions have worked.
Is there a timeframe for how long a question can be open? should I close this one and open a new one?

I apologize...I'm still fairly new to this forum.

rogle, remember that the XP and Vista topic areas get 50 or more questions per day, and it appears in the overall list of unanswered questions in reverse date order, and therefore this question has slipped so far down the list of Open Questions that I doubt more experts will find it in order to try and respond to your problem.  I would suggest that you create a new 20 point question (minimum value of a question is 20 points) which has a link to this one.  Be sure to copy the url of THIS question in your new one and advise everyone to only reply to the original question.  Later, I can delete your "pointer" question and refund the points (or you can do so yourself by clicking the Delete question button in the question box)...
If you decide to do this, please leave a comment to that effect so that the cleanup moderator will not delete this question.

rogle,
Your attempt to select this post {http:#a21492204} as a solution has been rightfully objected to.

You have been around EE long enough to understand the procedures, plus you have been given complete instructions by LeeTutor.

Without objection from LeeTutor or Computer101 (they were the first Admins involved), I will close this question in four days.

A request has been made in Community Support to close this question:

If there are no objections, a moderator will finalize this question in approximately 4 days as follows:

Please only post in this question again if you have an objection.

RobWill,

The "detect and repair" did not correct the issue.
...also...
It also happens with a short path on the server.

I appreciate your patience and willingness to assist.

Vee_Mod,

To be honest, I do not understand the ramifications of your post and objection.

All I know about EE is that I can answer questions and get points. I can then use those points to post questions that I need assistance with. Beyond that...I do not know all of the intricacies of how EE works. I apologize if I gave you the impression that I knew as much.

I can say that as a new person, your post does come off as very cold and callous. I'm not sure if that was your intent. I apologize if I have offended you in some manner. I will endeavor not to offend you further in the future.

rogle,
Please take the time to read through all of comments made by LeeTutor.
He carefully and cordially provided you with the information that you needed - and gave you details of the 21 day rule/clean up process.
He also gave you a link to the Help Pages and further tips on how to manage your questions.

You, me, and everyone else who has posted in this question is a volunteer and if my comments are seem abrupt (or straight-forward) it is because I don't feel the need to give detailed explanations to someone who has been a member of EE for four years.

Vee_Mod,
I have only been participating in EE for around 2 months.

I understand we are all volunteers. I guess that's why I don't understand your shortness. If you're not willing to help a newbie, then why do you volunteer to be a Moderator?

RobWill seems more willing to help. If you are going to take my points away from me, then I want him to have them.
