How do I turn OFF the "feature" where a new window opens when I double click on the right side of Windows Explorer.

I know I can right click and select explorer, but that not how I've been working for 10 years.
also, the setting for "Open each folder in the same window" is already checked.

Any ideas how explorer got in this state?  It seems to happen after an update or something.

Hi iunknown21,

The folder association settings may have been messed up. See if applying the "Folder" association fix from here helps:

File association fixes for Windows Vista:

Hi iunknown21,

I believe something in the Folder/Directory associations are messed up. Can you post the registry export of these two branches:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory

and

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder

To export the keys, open Regedit.exe and from the file menu, choose Export. Select .reg file format from the list, and save each branch to separate files.

you bet.  they are attached.  I believe that the problem is tha the default action is Explorer (it's the bolded one on the context menu) but open is being used when I double click on the right side.

The settings look correct when I compared them with my system. I'll work more on this issue and post back!

Hi iunknown21,

I don't have a definitive solution at the moment. But I'd like you try running the ShellExView utility and disable third-party shell extensions (context menus only) temporarily, restart Windows and observe if the problem disappears or not.

See "Method 2" in this article:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
(Ignore the article title, description)

I used it an disabled ALL context menu extensions.  I restarted and....
no joy....same as before.  double clicking opens a new window.

I'm going to increase to the max on this one....

Hey Folks,

I am also having this problem and its driving me batty.  First, I am running Vista Enterprise 64-Bit.

Again, as with iunknown21, when I double click on any drive or folder, it performs an "open" instead of an "explore".  The "Open in same window" option is set, yet, the problem persisted.

Now, I wiped out the user profile and created a fresh one (which by the way is a bit more difficult with Vista, but still doable), and that fixed the problem...  for awhile.  I thought maybe I did something, so I repeated a process, keeping a VERY close eye on anything that might get installed.

Within a few days, sure enough, it started happening again.  SO, with the possibility I may have some sort of wierd trojan or virus, I threw caution to the wind and completely formated and reinstalled Vista.

Since I re-installed, I decided to leave it clean for a few days with the exception of Windows Updates to see what would happen.  I'll be darned if it didn't come back AGAIN!  Keep in mind, in this clean state, I litterally left it sitting there, OFF the network for a few days, and the ONLY thing I did was reboot it.

It should be noted that the install media is a Vista Enterprise 64-bit SP1 install.  Could it be something weird with SP1?  Maybe Enterprise SP1?  I would think if it was, people would be screaming!

Finally, I re-installed again, and then installed each available Windows Update one at a time, to see if it was any of them, but not from what I can tell.  Talk about a long and arguous task!

iunknown21, are you running the Enterprise edition?

I'm at a complete loss, and have religated myself to right clicking and clicking Explore, until I can figure this out.

Thanks for listening.

Whew!  I thought I was the only one in the world who was having this problem.
I'm running Vista Ultimate x64  and I aslo believe that the problem showed up after an MS Update.

What's wierd is that a double click is suppose to do the "default" action and the default action is the "bolded" one in the context menu.  For me the "bolded" and hence the "default" one IS explore not open.

I have no idea what is going on.
