As of some point in the last week I am no longer able to update existing drivers or install new drivers on my Toshiba Satellite X200 running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit.
Errors vary depending on whether a setup.exe or Vista itself catches the error. The Vista errors all report a driver was found but not could be installed, and tell me "Access is denied".
This is a big nuisance because I discovered this while applying some Toshiba patches, so I'm now lost my video and trackpad drivers (the patches uninstalled the old ones but could not install the new).
I have no System Restore points.
I've seen some references to Vista fixes from MS. I am pretty certain I've applied them all, including a hotfix (which sadly was more of a notfix). I have tried resetting permissions on my entire drives, plus every top-level key in HKLM in the registry (since I've found some things suggesting it's a registry issue). No good.
Uninstalling in Device Manager, rebooting: no good.
Any ideas? If it's the registry, what do I need to fix? Or is it something else?
