The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Cannot connect laptop wirelessly to printer attached to Windows Vista machine

Asked by coderlen in Windows Vista, Wireless Networking, Windows XP Operating System

Tags: Microsoft, Windows, Vista & XP, Wireless Printer

Please Note: I need to resolve this question in the next 12 clock hours. I'm leaving town and this needs to be fixed on my friend's computer before I leave.

Server Computer: HP Pavilion a6244n
Server OS: Windows Vista
Server Printer 1: Canon Pro9000
Server Printer 2: Brother HL-2040
Server IP Address: 192.68.2.4

Client Computer: Dell Inspiron 1100
Client OS: Windows XP Home
Client IP Address: 192.68.2.5

The problem does not seem to be a lack of a good wireless connection. Wireless Network Connection Status is Excellent (5 green bars). It is an Unsecured wireless network.

I can ping the server computer from the client computer without any problems. No packets are dropped.

I can also ping the client computer from the server computer. Again, no packets are dropped.

However, when I type in the IP address of the server computer from the client computer in the Run window (\\192.168.2.4), I get this error message:

\\192.168.2.4 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permissions. Logon failure: user account restriction. Possible reasons are blank passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictoins, or a policy restriction has been enforced.

When I type in the IP address of the client computer from the server computer in the Run window (\\192.168.2.5), I get this error message:

Network Error Windows cannot access \\192.168.2.5 Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. Error code: 0x80070035 The network path was not found.

When I click on the Diagnose button, I find that a firewall on the client computer that was blocking the connection from the server computer to the client computer. When I turned off the Windows Firewall on the client computer, then the "\\192.168.2.5" command in the Run window succeeded.

However, with the firewall turned off, I still cannot access the server from the client. What am I missing? All I want to do is access the 2 printers attached to the server computer from the client computer.
