The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Install Virtual PC (free), create a virtual Windows XP environment and run your VB6 IDE in this environment.

when installing, try to do with the option "Run as Administrator".
Anyway, you will spend less time and money installing Visual Studio 2008 and loading your project into it. It will be converted automatically.

Have you seriously tried it with a REAL project (not one of these pre-package demo that works well for sure)? It doesn't work and it is not recommended as it doesn't convert to new structures, new components (except real easy one like labels and textboxes), uses a lot (too much) interops, ...

In short, it is not as easy as open in VS2008, compile and hit F5.

I usually refuse to work with old VS version. I convert all the projects (including big projects) I can form version to version. You have to count on this:
- You have to mantain a system with a deprecated language. So in the mean time you will have less coders available.
- You won't have any kind of support from Microsoft for a 10-years-old product. Even 3rd party web pages supporting vb6 are closing day by day.
- You will have serios limitations in a near future trying to use new technologies not supported by VS6 (by example: web services).
- You will need to use lots of code snippets to save the lack of those new technologies, usually done in a couple of lines with the new versions. This will need more coding time.
All this will take more time and money than migrating an existing project.

I agree with your points but can you admit that the conversion is not automatic as your other comment suggest ("It will be converted automatically.")?

I have seen many companies trying to do that and never been able because the conversion wizard is simply not good enough.

well, we don't have any clue about how complex is the author's application...

Let's get back to the original question....

Yes, Visual Studio 6 *is* supported on Windows Vista.   I have it installed on Vista and it runs fine.

I suspect that the problem may be related to User Account Control (UAC) as jaime_olivares has suggested

It will work in some circumstances depending on the controls you use. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vbrun/ms788708.aspx for unsupported controls
