What can I do to repair the following error message?

Zones: Windows Vista, Firefox Web Browser

Tags: MS, Vista, Ultimate, Firefox issue, firewall issue, virus issue or all of the above?

I cannot execute anything on my desktop, or even in the start menu. NOTHING AT ALL. The error message is:

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have appropriate permission to access them."

HINTS
1. Last nite, after making some tweaks , of which I can no longer remember now, Firefox was unable to connect. Tried 10X IE was fine.

2. So I did a system restore back to before I started messing around, before I went to bed last nite,

3. This AM, same problem. IE is ok, but NOT FFox. The PC is working fine otherwise. Over nite scan finds a trojan; Healed.

4. Now as I start to move around certain programs, A newly installed (3 days ago) COMODO Firewall PRO, free, starts asking permission to allow certain apps to run. Of course I allow most, but not all.

5. I also woke up to a trojan "WEBTRENDS", having been found in overnite scan. I healed it.

So how can I get my functionality back? I am able to get into safe mode, but I do not know what to do when I get there. I suppose I could uninstall the firewall, but I fear that the rules it put into effect, will be left behind. How to I give myself permission to run my apps?

I am in big trouble and do not know my way around Vista very well.
Main question is with all this info i gave can you experts please tell me WHAT DO I DO NEXT?
