Question

Adding domain user, Vista says account does not exist

Asked by: humeniuk

Server - Windows 2003
WS - Windows Vista Business

I am trying to add a domain user (new) as a user on the workstation (Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Manage User Accounts -> Add) and get one or the other of these error messages:

"The user DOMAIN/username could not be added to the Power Users group because DOMAIN/username does not exist."

or

"Windows cannot process the object with the name 'User Name' because of the following error:
Name translation: Could not find the name or insufficient right to see name."

The account does exist, of course, and I can add it to any other computer in the network (XP and Vista workstations).  Likewise, I can add any other domain account to this workstation without a problem.

Just to make life more interesting, I am now getting this:

"An object (User) with the following name cannot be found: "username".  Check the selected object types and locations for accuracy and ensure that you have typed the object name correctly, or remove this object from the selection."

I get this when I browse the network for accounts (add -> browse -> check names).  I get it for any username, not just the trouble one.  However, I can still add other user accounts conventionally, just not the one problem one.

hmmm most of the time i would say a simple domain rejoin should fix this - but everything else working leads back to potentially being a corrupted user - then again, you throw in the fact that it works everywhere else which puts us back to square one

Would be worth rejoining the domain on that machine to see if it resolves, sad as it is, sometimes the simplest little solution like that actually does work....

Thanks for the idea.  As it turns out, I tried that in the interim and there was no change.  I created two new accounts and tested them as well, but they also don't exist in the eyes of this workstation.  So, old accounts good, new accounts bad - even if the configuration is exactly the same.

At the moment, I'm leaning towards the following solution:
1) uninstall Vista;
2) throw Vista CD as far as possible;
3) reluctantly install XP, which has the advantage of being annoying in mostly predictable ways;
4) buy dog; and
5) kick aforementioned dog.

hahah! lol i like that game plan...

I wouldnt be too hasty about throwing the vista cd's too far - there must be something that we are missing here - i run vista in a few places and it *seems* to be operating pretty well, and i havent seen any issues with the AD integration

I was going to ask if you get the problems with other new accounts, this is very odd, I'm wondering if Kerberos has fallen over between that machine and the server

If you want to have a try, test the following - if you have time

1) Remove Vista box from the Domain
2) Remove Computer account for Vista from AD
3) Rename the Vista machine (so there is no ref when we rejoin it back)
4) Rejoin the Domain and see if it shows the troublesome account
5) Create a new account, and see if Vista recognises it - if it doesnt, but it does see the previously created troublesome accounts, then we know there is something dropping after the initial join

I should have renamed the computer before I rejoined.  The rest is essentially what I did.

I will try again either tomorrow or Tuesday and post the results here.

Rover thanks you, btw.

I ended up upgrading to XP, however, in most instances, the suggested solution should work.
