Question

BSOD Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Asked by: nicholasjwolf

I have a user of a brand new Sony VAIO VGN-FZ430E running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. She received a BSOD while working on her desktop "Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. 0x000000D1 (0x00000000 , 0x00000002 , 0x00000008 , 0x00000000)". I ran sfc /scannow and it produced an error report in Windows/Logs/CBS. There are files that could not be repaired but were detected by Windows as corrupt. I copied the entries containing "cannot repair". Per MS KB, "This entry indicates that the file content does not match the operating system definition for the file. In this situation, the SFC.exe program cannot repair the file." (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228)

It seems windows sidebar error that cause. Try this:

Open a command prompt by being Administrator (Right click on Command Prompt and click Run as Administrator). Insert Vista CD in, and run these commands below in this order:
- regsvr32 -u sbdrop.dll
- regsvr32 -u wlsrvc.dll
- regsvr32 atl.dll
- regsvr32 sbdrop.dll
- regsvr32 wlsrvc.dll

many of those errors are caused by bad ram, so test it first with memtest86+ from www.memtest.org

nobus: I ran Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool before startup. "No memory errors were detected." Is that reliable or should I really use memtest86+?

PUNKY: I opened command prompt as Administrator with Windows Vista install DVD in the DVD drive:

C:\Windows\system32>regsvr32 -u sbdrop.dll

Results in: "The module 'sbdrop.dll' failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files. The specified module could not be found."

I tried searching for the .dll files on the DVD, but with no luck. What do I need to do?

A second system recovery/restore to factory settings is returning corrupt files as well, per SFC. I don't understand this...is it acceptable for a factory-imaged OS to show corrupt files upon SFC /scannow after installation?

by: PUNKYPosted on 2008-06-03 at 15:40:29ID: 21705253

The Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool built-in Vista is well good tool, however, it is not hurt to try Memtest as well.

I dont know why you can use those commands, it should be CD drive (name):\Windows\System32\

If you have restored 2 times and still have error with SFC, then problem might be deeper than just corrupted files in windows. Can you ID the hard drive vendor? and then go download utility from that vendor website to diagnostic the drive.

i recommend to run the free memtest86+, as suggested, at least for 3 complete passes.
>>  ...is it acceptable for a factory-imaged OS to show corrupt files upon SFC /scannow after installation?   <<  this points more and more to ram problems...

Sony Tech Support believes the issue to be hardware related. The VAIO is being exchanged at the retail store from which it was purchased.
