Question

Unable to boot up Windows Vista Ultimate -- black screen with white pointer (hangs)

Asked by: moshecristel

Today I tried to boot up my desktop computer running Windows Vista Ultimate and there was some hesitation in booting so I shut it off and rebooted manually.  On reboot, I got a message (can't remember it exactly) that there had been an error and gave me an option to "Startup Repair".  I ran it and it said that no problem had been detected and that I should restart.  I did and on reboot ended up at the Windows Error Recovery screen allowing me the following options:
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Start Windows Normally

None of the above options works... all send me to a screen that is pure black with just a white pointer cursor that hangs indefinitely.  I've also tried going to the Advanced Boot Options (F8) on startup and "Repair Computer".  There I've tried running "Startup Repair" again and "System Restore" which I am not able to run because there is no save point.

I assume that this problem is due to the following Microsoft bug: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946532 but am wishing that this isn't the case since I don't want to lose all of my personal files.  Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated on how to either:

1) Repair the system so that it can properly boot up
2) Re-install Vista in a way that does not destroy all of my files

Thanks!

If the worst comes to the worst you can remove the drive from the computer, put it into another as a slave and copy off your personal files, you can then replace the drive and re-install vista from scratch. Itt would be a good idea to make backups to your personal files to removable media eg a usb disk in future.

Boot system with Vista DVD, select Repair option, and the choose Command Prompt option.
In DOS windows, type following commands below:

bcdedit.exe /fixMBR
bcdedit.exe /fixBOOT

If that doesn't help, run Repair option again but select Repair Installation. Your data will be intacted.

Sorry, wrong command above. Try below:

bootrec.exe/fixMBR
bootrec.exe/fixBOOT

KTS & PUNKY:
Both ideas were good but I ended up just re-installing Vista.  It turns out that Vista puts all of the user files in a directory called "Windows.old", so none of my documents were lost.  I will definitely be getting a backup strategy ready from now on.  Thanks for the pointers.
