Question

Comcast requiring activation

Asked by: Blinkr

I thought I would see if anyone else had run across this problem. I tried to setup a friends new Vista Home Premium laptop on a wireless router. The router works fine as I already have a desktop running. My problem is that whenever I start IE, I get a EULA agreement page from Comast that gives me the option to accept or deline the agreement. After accepting it, I get an error page that says that it was unable to activate the residencial service. The service is already activated working fine. Their TV's & internet have been running fine. I'm using a Linksys wireless router (WRT110). The laptop can access the router fine. But for some reason Comcast needs to be activated. I called Comcast & they say that everything is all setup & activated (which I already knew).

Has anyone else run into this problem? I'm not sure if its a Vista or a router problem. The router is working fine with the other PC. The other PC is hardwired to the router.

I have Comcast and have three Windows Vista machines (two 32-bit Ultimate, one 64-bit Ultimate) and a Windows Home Server all on my network and have never experienced this problem. This is obviously something Comcast should be able to help you with as it is a problem with their "self installation kit" activation software. I'd call them up and demand they help you remedy the issue, sometimes it helps to get a little nasty with them... as the average Comcast CSR seems to have the IQ of a chickpea.

You can try uninstalling any Comcast software that you have on the machine in question... since your internet connection is already setup there is no need to have any of the software on there to begin with.

That message is being delivered because your cable modem doesn't have the correct DOCSIS info file from comcast's registration servers.  Sometimes it takes a few reboots of the cable modem to get it working, but it's all on their end, trust me.  Call them and give them the MAC address off the back of the modem and they can register it for you using their tools and you should be good to go.

Oh if that doesn't work try plugging in directly to the cable modem, accept the EULA, make sure you can browse the internet, then plug everything back up the way it was.  Comcast also will not help you if you mention the word router, so if you have a problem plug your computer in direct before you call.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I don't have any Comcast software installed on any of the PC's.

pjnofrills, what you are saying makes since. I have called Comcast & of course its not their fault!! But I will plug the laptop directly into the modem & see if that will get things working right. I will also restart the modem a couple more times. I prefer not having to deal with the dimwits at Comcast, but only as a last resort.

I will post the results when I get back to the machine in question.

I forgot to ask. Would I get the same result if I hardwired the laptop into the router to get past this EULA?

by: pjnofrillsPosted on 2008-07-11 at 16:21:55ID: 21986764

It's possible, but I think it's looking to register the MAC of the laptop, but I would make it go direct through the cable modem to do it, then if it works ok, hook it back up and reset the cable modem and router.

Well I tried your suggestion & plugged it directly to the modem. It kept doing the same thing. I called CC & this time I got someone that actually tried to help. We did numerous things with no joy.

I brought the laptop to my shop & tried it on my network (CC also). It worked fine. So I'm taking it back along with used wireless router that I had on the shelf & see if it works any better with this old router connected to the CC modem.

Keeping my fingers crossed!! Thanks for all of the help!!

OK, I tried with another router & got the same results. It really looks like this definitely has something to do with either the laptop or CC. But since it worked fine at my shop (CC also), I'm going to have to say that this is a CC problem.

I told my customer to call CC back & have someone come to the location & tell him why this is going on.

I will post the results as soon as they get things working correctly.

The client has returned the laptop to where he purchased it & will getting something else. I don't think that was necessarily the problem. But we will see when he gets a new one. I have advised him to find something with Windows XP Pro if possible.

I'm still testing this out with a new PC.

by: BlinkrPosted on 2008-12-02 at 15:39:44ID: 23082030

This was solved by contacting Comcast to come & installed one of their wireless routers for the client.

Thanks for all of the suggestions!
