Question

Newly created user accounts log off immediately

Asked by: agesofman

I have a Vista PC which currently is running solely an admin account. It has had SP1 installed.

I want to set up a 'standard user' account so that I can implement some parental controls on my sons usage.

When I follow the normal add a new standard user account (I have tried several times, with or without a password, with or without any controls) and attempting to logon to this account, Vista briefly displays 'welcome' and then immediately displays 'logging off' and returns to account logon screen.

Enabling de facto guest account and attempting to logon to Guest account gives same behaviour.

Can anyone help with a solution or what I can check?

Thx BradGroux - the post just confirmed I need to protect from PC from my teenager experimenting - he had tried to install a keylogger that had overridden this entry in the registry!
I would be interested in how you found answer in MS knowledge base - even knowing it exists I had problems finding the post! :(

I have a Sharepoint website at work where Myself and my team keep a running list of "common issues"... this was one of them =)

Sounds like you have a technologically savy teenager on your hands... I used to be that way and I did some things that could have gotten me in big trouble with the law had I ever been caught. As a bit of advice on dealing with it all I can say is to be brutally honest and open with them. Let them know you caught it and you aren't as technologically inept as they think! Let them also know you encourage their exploration of all technologies but they must learn to walk the fine line between what is right and what is wrong and that it is up to them to gain your trust in that respect... or they face the consequences, including losing all "technology rights" that they have right now.

My parents were clueless about technology when I was that age (mid-1990s) and looking back I wish they would have kept closer watch on my habits (without the use of out-right spying). Had I been caught doing some of the illegal things I did I would have been in deep trouble and my parents would have been shocked like some of my friend's parents were when they were caught. I wasn't doing anything terrible but even something as simple as defacing a vulnerable website can get the authorities knocking down your door in this day and age. Doing something stupid as a teenager can have a huge effect on your life now and luckily I never got caught for the idiotic things I did.

I applaud  you for being a proactive parent... there are too few of those these days.
