Vista: Windows Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer) does not respond.

Hello!

A very similar question already has been asked one week ago. Since there was no specific solution
I am starting this threat.
Two days ago I ran into same problem.

After Windows Update the system came up with some system tray
symbols deaktivated (clock, sound, network energy). In properties
dialog box of start menu first the where greyed out, after next reboot
it was possible to active them again.
But since then Windows explorer does not respond for minutes opening
"Computer", Programs, Right Clicks on Desktop (for example to empty trash), etc.
Disabling these system tray icons does not help.

There was no new program installation at this point.
Unfortunately I do not have any system restore points.
CPU during waiting for response is under 10%.

With that most recent patch a new Windows Search 4.0 version was
installed (KB940157). Disabling that Windows Search service makes no difference.
Additionally KB 915597 (Defender Update) and in my case Silverlight (KB951213- already
deinstalled) came with that patch.

Same happens with a newly created temporariliy User.
It will NOT happen if Vista is started in Safe mode with
network drivers!

Only one "red" entry is visible in Application Log:

Programm Explorer.EXE, Version 6.0.6001.18000 arbeitet nicht mehr mit Windows zusammen und wurde beendet. Überprüfen Sie den Problemverlauf im Applet "Lösungen für Probleme" in der Systemsteuerung, um nach weiteren Informationen über das Problem zu suchen. Prozess-ID: ba4 Anfangszeit: 01c8f5c3d1f2487b Zeitpunkt der Beendigung: 31

Translation:
Program exporer.exe ...does not work together with windows and is being stopped. Go to solutions in
system control to search for help ...

System is:
Vista 64 SP1
Completely patched.

Does anybody has an idea to get closer to something like this?

I recall a similar situation in Windows XP (not Vista x64) with Windows Explorer when the program was trying to access a file that was associated with a deleted application.

HOWEVER, it only occurred when the right mouse button 'open with' function was accessed - this is not the situation you outline.

Another situation where Explorer (again, I have only only seen this in XP) can get very sluggish is when a network share is not available but set to 'reconnect at login.'  Again, I have only only seen this in XP.

I have been using Vista x64 since RC1 and have found it to be somewhat annoying at times but have not seen your problem.  Many of the problems seem to be associated with device drivers - as various device drivers get more 'mature' problems seem to go away.

Since the problem does not occur in Safe mode, it may be associated with a device driver.  I can't recall from your earlier 'threa(d)t' if you tried MSCONFIG to do a selective startup - this gives you a bit more granularity than Safe Mode but does not allow you to selectively install device drivers, although you can control startup items and processes, many of which are associated with the functionality of device drivers.

As for your Explorer.exe being PNG (persona non grata) to Vista, it may indicate that one of the VIsta files is corrupted or of the incorrect version.  You could try RUNning sfc /scannow to check the integrity of the Vista files.

Thanks for your comment!

The mentioned problems with reconnect state of drives I know. This can be annoying
if associated with icons in start menue. Seems that vista doesn't have this problem
anymore.

I am using Vista since half a year. It is the second time already I come into a unsatisfying
system state.
Very new for me was a blue screen connecting to a wlan. So I agree that many problems
are associated with device drivers.
I am runing vista64 on a Dell Latitude D830. Maybe one driver from Dell has problems after
the update.

Sfc did not show any bad results.
I will come back after my tests with MSCONFIG as soon as possible.

'Unsatisfying system state' is a good way to put it!

The Sysinternals site on Microsoft.com has a number of useful utilities.

Sysinternals is here:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/0e18b180-9b7a-4c49-8120-c47c5a693683.aspx

One of the most useful Sysinternals tools is Process Monitor
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx
It's a super-Task Manager application that allows you to track file and process activities, among other things.

Soooooo...

I have spent some time to identify the problem with msconfig (as warrenbuckles
has suggested) doing try and error.

The blocking service is "shellhardwareerkennung" (not sure how it is named in english
language)!

With deactivated "shellhardwarerecognition" (is that right?) everything is fine.

Question is now why. No idea why it came suddenly after patchday.
This service is responsible for messages concerning newly connected devices
for automatic play.

I have installed VMware Workstation. The software asks to disable automatic
playing of cd's (because of vm's). Is there any connection?

Very mysterious.

Hello Holger:

Although you are done with this issue - thanks for the pts. - you might be interested in the attached site that lists other services in Vista that you may want to disable:

Hello warrenbuckles,

yes, the link is interesting. During this thread I already started to disable
some things and found the machine to be faster. Seems to be worthwhile
to reduce services.....

Greetings

Holger
