Your best bet is to get a USB driver reader. Something like http://www.newegg.com/Prod
You could also try Spinrite. You could start right away once you burn the ISO, but it typically takes a day or more on a really troubled harddrive.
The Bytecc device is really worh the investment. Once you connect the device, just browse to the right folder and copy your files. After that I'd run chkdsk on the external drive. Vista seems very easily corruptable. After the chkdsk completes I wouldn't be surprised if Vista is running as good as new (for Vista).
The only bad drive that I was unable to recover data from with it was one where the head was scraping the platters.
