Question

HP DVD QuickPlay Starts Automatically

Asked by: danhrmr

I have a HP 15" screen Laptop with VISTA; but as I am out of town for quite awhile and laptop not with me, I don't know model number.  Laptop is one year old, so it is current.  The HP DVD QuickPlay software keeps starting automatically upon Startup or after Sleep.  That is, I get a full black screen that finally loads QuickPlay options and choices.  Have to 'x' it out to close it.  I finally found a way to stop it upon Startup via msconfig, unchecking QuickPlay.  But it still automatically starts up after Sleep, and strangely, sometimes even after regular Startup.  Is there a way to stop HP DVD QuickPlay from starting sutomatically at all times?  Of course, I still need the software to operate my DVD, but it is soooo annoying when it automatically starts up, fills the screen, and I have to wait until it is totally started before I can close it.  This is particulary annoying, not only to me, but to visitors at the house who want to use my laptop, and don't know what to do.  Bottom Line - I want it when I need it; not when I don't.

You should look for a option in the HP Quickplay that says something along the lines of "Run at resume". I recommend this because sometimes if you remove what ever is triggering the startup e.g. registry key, service, shortcut etc the application will replace what you have edited or deleted to run at startup again.

If you dont use Quickplay you could of course just uninstall it.

I have tried to look at and right click throughout Quick Play and could not find anything to disable it at Startup (and certainly not at resuming Sleep).  Question:  If I uninstall it, will my DVD still work?  I mean, does the DVD drive need the HP QuickPlay to operate correctly or play DVDs when I want to ?  Thanks ahead of time !    Dan   danhrmr ......

I have not used the QuickPlay software myself but uninstalling should not stop you from using the dvd drive at all. If for some strange reason it does, you can always reinstall it.

I struggled with this until I took a reeeeeal close look at the power button I was using... it's the quick launch button!  Look around and see if you are doing the same thing... chances are there is a different power button!

ssklee, it applies if it is what you are doing wrong.  The application is fine... I have several PC's with the QuickPlay software and they operate just fine.  It was one new laptop I wasn't familiar with that kept duplicating this problematic behavior and it took a simple USER change, no SYSTEM changes, to "fix" it.  Ironically, I have now run into this several times while helping others as the app is loaded onto most new HP's.  I posted the comment in the hopes that it would help others.  'Sorry that it hit such a sour note in your morning!

I don't want to use it, so it's just fine with me.
