Browse All TopicsHello,
I am trying to fix a computer with vista. when is booted it says "Bootmgr is missing". I tried inserting the Vista CD to do a recovery but it is not finding any windows installation (when it asks you to click on the installation.) I went a head and tried to do a startup recovery anyways but it did not work. The guy I am fixing it for said that one day he turned the computer on and it just gave him that message. Is there maybe a way for using Ccommand to copy the bootmgr files to the HD?

Have you tried method 2 from this page? (bootrec /rebuildbcd)

I didn't try it from the page, but i just looked at the page you sent and it is pretty much what i did. i've gotten the confirmation message on the command prompt window. I will try this though when i get home
---------
If Bootrec cannot locate any missing Windows installations, you must remove the BCD store, and then you must re-create it. To do this, type the following commands in the order shown below: (Remember to press ENTER after each command)
bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
bootrec /rebuildbcd

Also The vista that was installed on this computer was from a GATEWAY CD that came with the pc. and the Vista CD that i have beent trying to use to fix the computer is just a normal vista CD. would this cause the problem on that there is no windows installation detected during the Vista recovery wizard?
I can't imagine why. The Vista Recovery Environment should work with all versions of Vista. There is even a place to download the makings of one that can be burned to a CD, if the computer didn't come with a Vista DVD:

This page recommends using the Startup Repair, but since you've already tried that, you might try what someone called g00ch wrote for an alternate method that worked for him:
soft ware/t roub leshoo ting /vista -tip -- repa ir-b ootmgr -is- missin g-er ror-25 1733 .php
fix the "BOOTMGR is missing" error, try this:
http://lifehacker.com/
To
1. Boot to the Vista installation DVD
2. Choose "Repair Your Computer"
3. Choose "Command Prompt"
4. Run "bootrec /fixboot" (no quotes). This will re-write the Windows Vista boot sector code.
5. Reboot - Vista will now start up normally.
