It used to be very easy to configure a default profile in XP and Server 2003, you just set up a user you want to be the default and copy and paste the Docs and Settings folder over the 'Default' profile. Now with the C:\users folders it does not work as a lot of the folders corresponding to the profile aren't actually located under that path. I have researched this online a lot and still haven't an answer.
Anyone?

The profile folder structure has been redesigned in Vista/2008 (profiles v2) and is not compatible with old profiles from 2000/XP/2003 (profiles v1). To be able to get access to data when logging on to both v1 and v2 systems, you nead to use folder redirection.

This ended up working well. Using a local account to copy over the C:\Users\Default works the best. Read the whole thread to if you do not know how to load/unload registry hives.
For Windows 2008, 2008 R2 and 7 this is the Microsoft recommended way to customise the Default Profile: http://support.microsoft.c
Quoting from the article: "When the default user profile is customized in the manner that is described in this article, it reconstructs the source profile in a format that is appropriate for use by multiple users. This is the only supported method of customizing the default user profile for the Windows operating system. If you try to use other methods to customize the default user profile, it may result in extraneous information being included in this new default user profile. Such extraneous information could lead to serious problems with applications and system stability."
