There can be alternate login manager installed, such as HP Credential Manager from HP ProtectTools suite. Check for such software and uninstall/disable it. You should get only one original login screen.

When I go to log into my Vista machine, the first time I enter my credentials, Vista accepts them then says "logging off" on the screen, after which I am returned to the logon screen. After I enter my credentials a second time, the machine logs in and everything works as normal. This is a hassle, but it also bothers me that the first time it says "logging off" -- logging who off?

manojkumars - Vista SP1 is already installed, I have active virus scanning enabled and have a clean bill of health, and I have tried with multiple accounts and get the same results.
gratex_ssd - this is an HP box, so maybe youre onto something. I will check it out and get back to you. thanks for the tip.
