I have attempted all of those options.....

Did you choose startup repair, otherwise a reinstall may have to be done.
What type of computer do you have.

by: demarinersPosted on 2008-12-07 at 16:39:31ID: 23118091

I did a startup repair.  It is a custom build computer.  This happened all the sudden.  Eevrything was working fine.

Are you able to set the drive as a slave drive then run a virus scan on it.You will need another drive with a os on it,or connect it to another computer.

by: demarinersPosted on 2008-12-09 at 16:11:38ID: 23135203

Well they are 2 RAID drives on raid 0 I think.  I guess I could install an OS on another drive and load it......but how could I do a virus scan on the one drive.  How do we know it is a virus?

by: joinaunionPosted on 2008-12-09 at 19:16:38ID: 23136006

There is a variant with the same name that is a virus. Are you able to boot into safe mode or last known good configuration? When booting press f8 to choose these options, you will need to do it quickly while its booting.
I,m just trying to do all we can so we can avoid a reinstall so cross your fingers.:)

by: demarinersPosted on 2008-12-09 at 19:35:16ID: 23136098

Safe mode creates the same issue and so does last config.  This happened all the sudden.  I turned off the computer and the next minute it does this everytime I boot.  I have restored all the was back in september even and no dice.  I may be able to install an OS on a drive and possibly make it work.  Unless you know of a way or virus scan through command prompt

by: joinaunionPosted on 2008-12-10 at 00:03:24ID: 23137069

There are ways to do virus scan from cd depending on what antivirus software you have. The unfortunate thing is if this does'nt work a reinstall will have to be done.
One other thing to try in your command prompt is chkdsk so type chkdsk c: /f
Example:c=drive letter, use space between c: /f
Sorry for late reply i,m at work lol

What if I shrink my partition.  Then install windows xp or vista on a different partition.  Then I assume I couldboot onto that and then fix the other partition?  What do you think?  Then I could erase that partition when everthing is working again and get it to boot with vista again.

by: joinaunionPosted on 2008-12-12 at 13:56:10ID: 23161441

Do you mean you want to create another partition to run the virus scan ?Yes it can be done, but if its negative the were back to square 1 again.(If your willing to do it then yes go for it)Do you know anyone that will let you connect the drive to there computer to do virus scan on it?
What were the results of the chkdsk?
What happens when you put windows disk in and choose install windows?

by: demarinersPosted on 2008-12-12 at 14:00:20ID: 23161472

I have 3 computers.....If you know of a way to do it remotely let me know.  chkdsk was fine and also i could install windows but havcent tried that yet.  I am trying to salvage this computer without a reinstrall.

by: demarinersPosted on 2008-12-13 at 15:51:47ID: 23165993

Ok, so I installed vista on the drive.  So now I have 2 partitions with windows installations.  The "corrupt" and the other one......I am able to load without any issues on the new installation.  What do you suggest I do now?  Thanks.

by: joinaunionPosted on 2008-12-13 at 21:55:15ID: 23166740

Run the virus scan on the other partition then post back.

by: demarinersPosted on 2008-12-13 at 22:01:50ID: 23166753

I ran adaware and onecare live, both found no virus

by: joinaunionPosted on 2008-12-14 at 00:33:41ID: 23167024

download spybot search and destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
then download avast free addition and after free regestrtion run scan http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
You use your email to register they send your key to email then after you install copy and paste key to program the run scan on c drive and partition.
If these fail a reinstall is the only option sorry.

I treid both of those methods and I just had enough.  I can't beleive that I had windows live onecare installed and somehow got a virus.  Ok so now what I would like to do is make a backup.  Is there any vista compatable backup program out there I could use to make sure I have a backup on an external drive so this wont happen again?  Thanks for all your help by the way.  I have acronis disk director but as it stands it only lets me adjust partitions.  I want to make an entire backup of my PC.  I do not have ultimate and I know ultimate has it built in.  Please let me know ASAP.

by: joinaunionPosted on 2008-12-14 at 20:59:12ID: 23171265

Well acronis has a program that you can use(its called acronis true image you have to pay for it) so does norton its called norton ghost(you have to pay for this also).
I found these free ones also.

by: demarinersPosted on 2008-12-14 at 21:58:34ID: 23171383

I am goign to go with the acronis true image.....I have disk director and it works well.  This seems like a pretty sound program and for $50 I will never have an issue.  I am going to put it on all my computers also.  Thanks for everything again
