Try stopping the Windows Defender service before you go to Windows Update.

Run...
services.msc
scroll down to and two-click "Windows Defender"
Stop(button)
OK
Try Windows Update.

sometimes when the update is not compatible with your system, it will fail. can you please specify what is the exact update which fails? check whether your system is compatible for that update.
