How to access a folder on an XP desktop from a VISTA desktop

Hi:

We have both XP machines and VISTA ones in our Active Directory domain.

From XP, we can access the folders on VISTA machine using this command (with run):

\\vista_1\D$

where vista_1 is the hostname and D is the drive name

However, we cannot do the same from VISTA machines to XP machines.

If you've some idea how to solve this problem, please help.

Any help would be appreciated.

Check the folder permissions on the Windows XP machine, usually by default you're unable to access the folders unless you share them properly

Thanks for reply.

I'm the admin in both machines. Both drives on both machines are normal, i.e. I don'e explicitly share the drives.

However, I can access a drive on VISTA from XP but I cannot do the same from VISTA to XP.

Sounds like you don't have the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder on your XP machine.

Make sure that you have network discovery turned on on the Vista machine.  That is what allows it to browse the network.
