Question

Iastor0 error with SSD raid array under Vista 64.

Asked by: Maioneis

Hello, I have installed Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit on a raid 0 array with Intel controller ICH10R.
The disks composing the array are two OCZ Vertex 120Gb Solid State Drives.

I have followed all usual suggestions for ssd's and disabled defrag, indexing and so on. What I'm getting is, sometimes the system seems to just freeze for a couple or more seconds, and then it goes back to normal. When this happens, I find an error in Windows events log saying "\Device\Ide\iaStor0 did not respond within the timeout period."

I know there was some trouble with Intel Matrix Storage Manager and raid volumes in the past, but it's supposed to be fixed from version 7.5 onward, and I have all the latest versions and drivers for all prominent software and hardware on my pc.

The motherboard is an Asus P6T Deluxe.

Can somebody lend a hand?

Intel has a support article referencing this issue here...

Yes I've read that. That's where they say the issue is fixed from version 7.5 of Matrix Storage Manager, I have version 8.8 installed though.

They also say:

# If available, install updated firmware for the device.
# Attach the device(s) to ports 3-5 on the Intel® 82801HR/HH/HO I/O controller hub (ICH8R) or port 3 on the Intel® 82801GR/GH I/O controller hub (ICH7R)
# Switch to IDE mode in the system BIOS.

My disks don't have a firmware updating utility, switching to IDE mode would disable raid so that's the last resort because I'm trying to find a way to make Raid work smoothly.

The second point refers to ICH8R or 7R but my board has ICH10R. Do you think it may be worth it to try and connect the disks to ports 3 and 5 anyway?

I tried switching the drives to port 3 and 5 anyway, but it didn't help.

The article also mentions the cause is a registry setting for link power management.  The key is located here
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStor(v)
you want to find the Parameters key in one of the above folders.

As always, make a backup before you change anything.

The next step for me to would be check to see if your BIOS is out of date.  None of the updates for the P6T Deluxe reference this issue...but given that ASUS has released 8 BIOS updates in 7 months...it might not be a bad idea to update and see if your problem is resolved, though i highly recommend updating through CD/Floopy, since i don't trust vista's UAC to work with ASUS's BIOS update utility....already hosed 2 boards that way.

I never use Windows to update bios too. But my bios is already updated to 1504, which is the latest. I even tried to roll back the bios, using two different versions from a couple of months ago and from 6 months ago but the problem is still there.

It looks like compatibility with ICH10R is not so good. Now I've installed an Adaptec controller for Raid and I'll use that one.
